Bitnation and Pangea history review: Part 1(2014-2015)

in #cryptocurrency5 years ago (edited)

Bitnation kicked off operations On July 14th, 2014 when Susanne Tarkowski Tempelhof shared a Google document on her personal Facebook page which was outlining Bitnation's intentions of building the world's first Blockchain powered virtual nation, rounding up all services that a traditional government provides though in a unique decentralized, voluntary and borderless way. It was such a bold plan, but with achievable goals and a concrete roadmap. Volunteers gathered and began promoting the concept immediately in just a few minutes.

The first year was intense for the company as the concept went viral and received international media attention, hundreds of volunteers, ambassadors, investors. However, it was also challenging in various ways including working with a frontier technology creating a previously untested concept, building and promoting it was not an easy task. The team was literally resilient all through the tough process encountered from its technical problems to outright sabotage attempts.

The team promised to have all its focus and energy on the Pangea platform and user adoption. The objective that was set up for the year ahead was to have 1 million users in its key markets that included frontier and emerging markets with high Bitcoin adoption, which also included but not limited to Turkey, Philippines, Mexico, Argentina, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and many more.

Another objective set was to improve its DAO infrastructure that included the management, accounting, and others. There was also a need to raise additional funds and building a stronger development community around the company's open source platform.

Achievements:

The Bitnation Pangea V 0.1.0 was built purposely to be optimized for decentralization, and mobile usage through the use of React.JS), the reason being that the company's audience would use it with smartphones. A major emphasis was placed on UI/UX, in order to make the platform mainstream and attractive.

Pangea was built using the technology of and in partnership with, Horizon and The Blocknet. Mawo, Sascha, Xander Shepherd, and Oskar Dahlgren did the heavy lifting on the platform development. Nick Cote and Arlyn Culwick helped with coordination.

Pilots

The team did 4 groundbreaking pilots, that included the world's first blockchain marriage, world citizenship ID, birth certificate and land title.

It was a vital process of making people realize that many things could be done without traditional governments, using Blockchain technology and in the process, the company attained international media attention. It was also important to inform about the development.

Team and Advisory Board.

There were more than a hundred volunteers across the world that participated in the Bitnation project during its first year, throughout everything from code to accounting, management, advisory, fundraising, and more with new people that keep on joining every month. The support was an amazing one for the project. A solid core took shape throughout the year, consisting of technology people, business people, administrators, communicators, and an advisory board.

Ambassador Network

The Ambassador Network expanded around the world courtesy of the steady leadership of Erik Vollstadt. The ambassadors' blog was created where various ambassadors work independently on Bitnation applications suited for their own local environment, from corporate incorporation to land titles.
The following step was to include a map of the Ambassadors into the platform so that users can communicate directly with the Bitnation Ambassador in their area for information or assistance.

Horizon and The Blocknet Partnerships

The company went into a partnership with Horizon and The Blocknet which it was extremely pleased with. These add great value to Bitnation using their great solid teams, tested and used technology. Horizon provides Bitnation with a good foundational technology using the NXT Blockchain technology. The blocknet would permit it to be blockchain agnostic, as it progresses.

Bitnation Space Agency (BSA)

The Bitnation Space Agency was formed through Bitnation's partnership with Spacechains Space Program and Bitcoin Kinetics. Iman Mirbioki runs it as a semi-independent organization, with the goal of finding more environmentally friendly fuel. He prepared the first two missions Stratoshi 1 and 2 which were to be launched that year. Bitnation also offers DIY hardware infrastructure elements even though its primary focus is on software development.

3rd Party Applications

Bitnation reached out and engaged with various 3rd Party DApp developers who began building on the Bitnation technology with the most high-profile one being Johan Nygren and his basic income application "basicincome.co" which is in the process of being integrated into the Pangea concept.

Media and Event Appearances

Bitnation has had over 200 media appearances across the world that include mainstream media like Wall Street Journal, BBC Radio 4, WIRED Japan, Forbes, New York Times, TechCrunch, Swedish and Russian Television and more.

DAO Structure

Bitnation seeks to become a fully decentralized DAO within the next five years. On that note, the team created CounterParty tokens as cryptoequity and incorporated SwarmOps, a Bitcoin software for decentralized accounting with the knowledge that full decentralization is a key priority for ensuring resilience.
For effective communication purposes, Bitnation migrated from Skype to Slack because the later provides more functionalities and is less distracting. It's as well always on a lookout for better, more decentralized and encrypted alternatives.

Investment

About 250 individual investors participated in its token sale. However due to some technical problems, low Bitcoin price as well as outright sabotage attempts, the team managed to raise a modest approximation of 15,000 USD and with that money it has managed to produce more results than most of the blockchain 2.0 startups.
