Everyone's an expert! How do I decide where to invest?

in #cryptocurrency6 years ago (edited)

Every day, an expert declares cryptocurrency a bubble. Every day, an expert declares cryptocurrency a paradigm shifting technology and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

So, who do you listen to?

Generally, we tend to listen to whoever confirms our previous conceptions and biases. If you tend to be more conservative with investments and trust the establishment, you will likely listen to the bubble expert. If you are an early adopter, or an adventurous risk-taker who digs new tech, you will listen to the paradigm world-changing guy.

Here's where I have to reveal my own bias. Who are the true experts in this field? The traditional Wall Street banking and investment firms? Or the tech-savvy people who actually understand blockchain technology? Granted, the traditional bank types understand economics very well, but do they understand the underlying value of this technology? Mostly not. Most see it purely as a speculation bandwagon -- which it partly is, but they lack the vision of its potential because they do not understand the technology (I don't either entirely, but I trust the tech experts more than the banking experts when it comes to the technology).

Warren Buffet explained that he doesn't invest in anything he doesn't understand. This is good advice. So, if you don't understand blockchain, learn about it. Do a little research. Read up on it. Listen to experts like Andreas Antonopolous, who truly is an expert, but can explain crypto-technology in layman's terms.

And don't put all your eggs in one basket. You should have a range of investments, from real estate to pensions to 401K's and so forth. Consider cryptocurrency as a part of this - a small part you are willing to risk losing some money on, in exchange for the possibility of gaining more than any of your other investments. Learn about a variety of cryptocurrencies - Bitcoin is just the biggest, but not necessarily the one with the most growth potential, and certainly not the most technologically advanced currency.

Take some time to learn, Then, you can choose wisely.
