Coinbase offers new merchant service: Coinbase Commerce

in #cryptocurrency6 years ago (edited)

Is this that mainstream thing we keep hearing about?

Coinbase, one of the most popular platforms for buying and selling Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash, is now offering its new service, Coinbase Commerce. This service enables merchants to accept cryptocurrency directly into a user-controlled wallet (not held by a third party). The service can be integrated into the checkout elements of any website and will enable mass adoption of cryptocurrency as a payment method.

Coinbase announced that they have already integrated with Shopify and are actively adding more integrations with merchants worldwide.

This could offer a solution similar to PayPal in scope - a direct way to exchange product for cryptocurrency in an easily accessible and user-friendly system. The merchant process is fully user-controlled, so no merchant funds are ever "hosted" anywhere except user wallets, removing the need for trust of any kind of centralised party or system.

Having Shopify as an already-existing platform is a boon to Coinbase, giving them instant credibility and utility for cryptocurrency users. It will be interesting to see how adoption spreads to other merchants over the coming weeks and months. The soon to be released implementation of SegWit support on Coinbase will no doubt be of great benefit to enhancing the performance of transactions via this new service.

I'm trying to avoid hyperbole here, but this could be a huge factor in popularising the usage of cryptocurrency for online purchases. It gets bigger and better from here!

Oh wow! I didn't know about this, that's great news! Coinbase should be making more of this. Ease-of-use/pay is what really will make cryptos mainstream and adopted by more people. I will stay tuned about more news form coinbase. Thanks!

Awesome post @xsid!

Thanks @bonsaiaustin! This is exciting news, I agree!

Except for the trust you give Coinbase in hosting your wallet.

The merchant does not need a coinbase wallet. It is not "hosted" by Coinbase. I clarified by adding the adjective "merchant".
