Immigration is the movement of people internationally into a country of which they are not citizens/natives of, and do not possess citizenship to reside there either as residents or naturalized citizens, to work there as a migrant worker or a foreign worker. Studies have shown that if the barriers to migration are eliminated, there will be a profound effect on world Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with an estimated gain of 67-147%. Development economists are also of the view that the reduction of barriers to labor mobility between developed countries and developing countries will reduce poverty.

Immigrants migrate for reasons such as social reasons where they move because they want a better quality of life, cultural reasons where they want religious freedom, economic reasons where they want to find better job opportunities or to improve their careers, environmental reasons which may be due to natural disasters or calamities and political reasons in cases where there is civil war in the country. Despite the study that shows that migration will be of a great benefit to most immigrants/migrants, they still face a lot of problems and challenges today.

Challenges Faced by Immigrants/Migrants

The first problem is accessing services. Immigrants who are undocumented have a very difficult time accessing services, and the major reason is that they are afraid of being deported. Due to this, even when they really need services such as that of a doctor, they avoid it by all means. Immigrants who are fortunate to access the services usually end up having a bad experience.

Another problem is the language barrier. The immigrants might not understand the language of the country if the language spoken there is different from the one they speak and understand. For example, the United States is not a multilingual country so it will be very difficult for an immigrant to buy goods, fill forms or get a job when he/she does not understand the language of the country.

Also, it is difficult to secure a job especially for undocumented immigrants who face added problems. Most immigrants usually feel frustrated when they are unable to get the same jobs with the same qualifications they had back home. Usually, employers want workers who have work experience in that country and since employers see their desperate needs, they offer them jobs that are not desirable and sometimes with dangerous roles.
There are also cultural barriers. Behaviour, attitude and religious beliefs might be different which may lead to misunderstandings.
There is the problem of transportation too. Taking public transportation might be difficult for immigrants. They may not be accustomed to the city so it will be difficult to take buses and taxi, know when and where to highlight from a bus, directions to destinations and so on. It will also be difficult for an immigrant to obtain a driver's license if the person decides to, due to language barriers or level of literacy.
Another barrier that is faced by migrants is the issue of racism. Racism usually deprives immigrants of good jobs and educational opportunities. There is discrimination on the basis of skin color, cultural customs and ethnicity.

Tykn is an innovative project that is making use of blockchain technology to relieve the stress and challenges faced by immigrants today, as well as providing individuals who do not have official identities with a reliable platform that will be used to record IDs and secure them permanently.

The Solution - Tykn

Tey Al Rjula is the co-founder and CEO of Tykn. Tykn was founded after he discovered that he is an invisible man and declared as an Unknown person due to war in which birth registries were destroyed as well as his birth certificate. Just like him, there are thousands of people in refugee camps who do not have identities due to wars which may have misplaced or destroyed their proof of their identities. Without all these important documents, most individuals cannot get a job to survive and there is no way for the documents to be authenticated. Children who are given birth to in refugee camps are left out because their birth registration process is not usually completed due to certain barriers. All these problems and more lead to the founding of Tykn.

Tykn is leveraging blockchain technology to provide a secure and permanent identification system for individuals. Blockchain technology makes it easier to register birth certificates and also identify refugees and migrants. It has designed a system for registering and verifying individuals through a distributed ledger. Its decentralized system is an added bonus that makes it accessible every hour of the day. Tykn is built on blockchain technology which makes it resilient and secure from war and natural disasters. The creation of a digital identity system helps Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to provide refugees with access to basic human rights such as education, job, healthcare services and so on.

Conclusion

Since the co-founder and CEO of Tykn has a firsthand experience of how not having an official identification system can affect a person negatively, and deny persons access to basic human rights, there is full assurance and confidence that Tykn will surely provide refugees and migrants a secure and reliable system through which their identities can be recorded permanently without having to worry about the effect and impact that war and natural disasters might have on their identities anymore. They will not have to live as invisible and unknown persons with Tykn.
