BitBrum - Birmingham's First Bitcoin Conference Happening This Sunday

in #cryptocurrency6 years ago (edited)

I live in Birmingham, England's second city. Unfortunately it lags way behind it's peers in many areas... there are much cooler cities, much more creative, much prettier. But Birmingham tries! It still has the signs of great industry, it was the workshop of the world for many years (I still have plans to renovate one of these pretty Victorian factory buildings, but that's another story!)...however since the 1970s it's been struggling to find a new place for itself.

There's a lot of things going for the city. It's still cheap, a well educated workforce (there's at least 5 universities!), a young, diverse population, good transport links. What I feel holds it back are old-fashioned ideas (you could say this about a lot of places). What's often missing is a vision for the future. The city council is famously inept, wasting hundreds of millions on badly conceived 'rejuvenation' ideas. In the three years I've been here, the centre seems to have been a permanent building site.

Anyway, Bitbrum! Yes... unfortunately there are no more tickets available, it sold out very quickly, which is a great sign that there's a pent-up demand for 'all things crypto' in this city. Luckily your friendly correspondent (me!) will be helping out at the event, so I'll be able to give all you Steemians ('Steemers' as @bettyboobs calls us!) the highlights.

We have the renegade economist Steve Keen, Chris Coney (of The Cryptoverse fame), Erik Finman (the famous young guy that used bitcoin to make over $1 million before his 18th birthday) & more.

Will Bitbrum be the catalyst that turns Birmingham in Crypto-utopia? Well, the local papers weren't even interested in covering the event, so not quite yet! And the 'Innovation Centre' (read: a big money pit run by grey faced, grey haired white men that wastes millions of taxpayers money pretending to encourage innovation) wasn't at all interested in hosting/sporsoring or being involved in anyway with the conference. O.k...we still have work to do!

It's going to be a fun Sunday. I'm hoping to go out for a drink on the Saturday evening with some of the speakers so it might be a bleary/fun Sunday.

Glad to hear crypto world finally arrived even to Birmingham amigo. Hope you will enjoy the conference and learn something new. Let us know how it went!

Have fun dude, want to hear all the shenanigans in person or post :)

Wow, that's fantastic! Bristol has the "Bristol pound" and Frome council is run by independents - the south west seems to be the most progressive part of the UK these days.

Yeah, funny the SW always seems to have that alternative flavour to it.
