Abro el Atlas, y recorro el mapa; qué de recuerdos, qué de imágenes se agolpan a mi imaginación. De la vista de Caracas, sobre todo, no pueden saciarse mis ojos; y aunqsue busco en ellos vanamente lo que no era posible que me trasladase el igrabado, paso a lo menos algunos momentos de agradable ilusión.

I open the Atlas, and I read through the map; such memories, such images form in my imagination. Of Caraca's view, above all, my eyes can't have enough; and even in my pointless search of what is impossible for the engraving to share with me, I experience at the very least some moments of pleasant wishful thinking.

Si solo el maestro Bello pudiera ver a Caracas hoy en día. ¡Qué de cambios notaría, qué de ascombros viviría! De ese paisaje bucólico en el que creció, de ese valle atravesado ptor cauces de ríos puros, nos queda la montaña y el valle transformado.
If only Master Bello could glance at Caracas today. What kind of changes would he observe! What a great surprise would he experience! Of that bucolic landscape in which he grew up, of that valley pierced by clear rivers, only mountain and a morphed valley is left.
Caracas, capital de Venezuela, fundada en 1567, ha cambiado como lo hacen naturalmente todas las ciudades, con el pasar de los años. Quizás ha sido un cambio muy radical: las doce manzanas que conformaron el cuadrilátero histórico (entre la plaza Bolívar y la esquina de Maturín y las de Traposos y la Bolsa), crecieron desorbitadamente, lo que la ha llevado a convertirse en un centro urbano agitado, saturado de habitantes, edificios, vehículos y negocios, que muestran una cara completamente distinta de lo que fue esa Caracas de ayer.
Caracas, capital city of Venezuela, established in 1567, has changed in the way all cities organically do over the years. Maybe it has been a very radical change: the twelve blocks that conformed the historical centre (between the Plaza Bolivar and the streets of Maturin, Traposos and la Bolsa), evolved tremendously, and has prompted it to become a busy city center, crowded with habitants, buildings, vehicles and business, that show a complete different face of what she was once yesterday.

Sin embargo, aún perviven algunos sitios icónicos, como calles empedradas, edificaciones coloniales, que nos permiten imaginar cómo fue el diario transitar de las gentes de la antigua ciudad: el vendedor que trajina en su bodega, el sacerdote camino a la iglesia, las mujeres con sus niños, en busca de los alimentos y del agua, los comerciantes cuidando del café, el tabaco, el añil, el cacao y los cueros para la venta interna y exportación.
However, some iconic landscapes still survive, such as cobbled streets, colonial buildings, that allow us to imagine how was the daily transit of the people in the old city: the salesman that attends business, the priest on the way to church, women with their children, in search for provisions and water, tradespeople looking after coffee, tobacco, indigo, cocoa, and leather for domestic sale and exportation.

Cuando se oye hablar de Caracas llegan los más diversos comentarios y opiniones que van desde el amor más profundo hasta los más negativos sentimientos en torno a ella. Vivir Caracas, vivirla desde adentro, sentirla, padecerla, cansarse de su espesura y sin embargo, sentirse revivido en ella. Caracas puede ser desordenada, caótica, incomprensible. También posee un lado apacible y sereno, tranquilo y amable, que se puede constatar en sus espacios arquitectónicos, en sus obras de arte al aire libre, en sus fiestas llenas de colorido y alegría en las calles.
When Caracas is mentioned the most diverse comments and opinions arrive, ranging from the deepest love to the most negative feelings in regards to the city. Experiencing Caracas, living it from within, feeling, enduring, getting exhausted of its thickness, yet, feeling relieved in it. Caracas can be messy, chaotic, incomprehensible. It also has a peaceful and gentle side, quiet and kind, which can be noted in its architectural spots, in the artpieces outdoors, in the parties full of colour and joy in the streets.

A veces es de todo y se funde en un sinnúmero de ciudades en una: la pueblerina, la rica, la avasallante, la insegura, la barata, la cara, la pobre, la limpia, la sucia, la financiera, la injusta. Por otra parte, es ciudad cosmopolita, moderna, decadente, atrevida, sensual; ciudad que emerge desde lo más profundo de los deseos de los citadinos que, en ocasiones, desdicen de ella, la desvirtúan, la reclaman, la quieren para luego abandonarla a su suerte.
Sometimes it's everything, and it fuses in a plethora of cities in one: the provincial, the rich, the crushing, the insecure, the cheap, the expensive, the poor, the clean, the dirty, the financial, the injust. On the other hand, is a cosmopolitan city, modern, decadent, daring and sensual; city that emerges from the deepest desires of the urban populations which, sometimes, renege on it, undermine it, claim to it, love it to then leave it on its own.
Caracas es ciudad de suelos fértiles, además de mantener una agradable temperatura durante todo el año. Se presta para el sembradío, para el trabajo de sus campos, para la agricultura, por lo que sin alejarnos mucho del centro urbano, se convierte en espacio rural, en asentamiento campesino: Galipán, pueblo enclavado en la ladera norte de las montañas del Ávila, es fecundo en flores, eucaliptos, hortalizas, verduras y frutas; el Hatillo, situado al sureste, ofrece también sus productos agrícolas a Caracas, a través de los asientos agrestes que hacen vida allí; el Junquito, zona cercana al valle caraqueño, mitad Caracas, mitad Vargas, es rico en fresas, flores, legumbres, hortalizas, café.
Caracas is city of fertile soils, also maintains a pleasant temperature throughout the whole year. It's suited for sowing, for farming, for agriculture, for which being close to the urban centre, it becomes rural, a peasant settlement: Galipan, town located in the northern slope of the mountains of the Avila, is fertile in flowers, eucalyptuses, vegetables and fruits; the Hatillo town, located to the southeast, also offers its crops to Caracas, thanks to the population living there; the Junquito, area close to the valley, half Caracas, half Vargas, is fruitful in strawberries, flowers, beans, vegetables, coffee.

La vida caraqueña vibra en los municipios más densos y más poblados, Libertador, al norte y Sucre, al oeste, y donde se constata el ajetreo impresionante en el que a diario se sumerge su gente.
Life in Caracas pulses in the densest and populated municipalities, Libertador, to the north, and Sucre, to the west, where the impressive daily hustle of its people can be observed.
Y esa población que hace vida en ellos es diversa: niños, niñas, jóvenes y adultos; personas provenientes de otras ciudades del país, y de otras partes del mundo conviven en ella, lo que le otorga un carácter especial. Sus juventudes imponen la moda en el vestir, en la forma de hablar, de gesticular.
And that population that lives on them is diverse: boys, girls, youngsters and adults; people from other cities of the country, and from other parts of the world live together, which grant a special nature to Caracas. The youth impose the fashion in dressing, in the way of talking, in gesturing.

En Caracas se conjugan tanto la formalidad como la informalidad en la manera de ejercer el trabajo. Dentro de la informalidad, se constata en la actualidad el auge de la venta de alimentos envasados, frutas, ropa y artículos domésticos y de reparación mecánica en las calles caraqueñas. Se venden cigarros detallados, café colado, golosinas traídas de otros países, fósforos, y se alquilan teléfonos celulares para llamadas rápidas.
In Caracas formality and informality meld together in the way of exercising work. In the informality, it's determined nowadays in the rise of the sale of packaged foods, fruits, clothing, household goods, and mechanical reparation items in the streets. Cigarretes are taken out of their carton and sold by piece, brewed coffee, candies are brought from other countries, matches, and cell phones are rented for quick calls.

El pulso vivencial es intenso al momento de abordar el metro o el transporte superficial; es imposible entrar o salir de los vagones sin sufrir apretujamientos y pisotones. En días laborales el tráfico es asfixiante. Desde hace unos cuantos años a esta parte las motocicletas se han convertido en una solución al transporte individual y colectivo, pero también en un problema que afecta al ciudadano que transita por las calles y avenidas, ya que en muchos casos los conductores no respetan las normas ni las señales de tránsito.
The living pulse is intense at the moment of boarding the subway or superficial transport; it's impossible to enter or leave the wagons without having your feet stomped or being squeezed. In working days traffic is suffocating. Since a few years ago the bikes have become a solution for individual and colective transport, but it has also developed in an issue that affects the citizens that transit the streets and avenues, because in many occasions the drivers don't follow the norms nor traffic signals.

En el otro extremo están los municipios de Baruta y El Hatillo, que quizás sean los municipios más agradables por su frescura, por el verde de su vegetación y por el carácter turístico que ofrecen como alternativa a los caraqueños. Hay algo de típico en estos dos municipios que los hace exhalar un aroma propio, algo de magia que invita al descanso, al solaz. Mantienen un aire pueblerino. Por último está Chacao, el más pequeño, mejor organizado y más limpio de la ciudad, lo que a los ojos de cualquiera resulta muy atractivo a la hora de querer escoger un lugar para vivir. Además de lo organizado, ofrece a los caraqueños una vida comercial y financiera muy activa y variada que lo hace moderno y vibrante ante la mirada de los pobladores.
At the other end the municipalities Baruta and Hatillo are located, which are maybe the most pleasant municipalities thanks to their coolness, to the green of their foliage and the turistic disposition that they offer as an alternative to the population of Caracas. There is something distinctive in these two municipalties that makes them exhale a characteristic aroma, some magic that calls for rest, for leisure. They retain a small town air. At last there is Chacao, the smallest, best organized and cleanest in the city, which to anyones eyes it's very attractive at the time of chosing a place to live. Besides organized, it offers to the citizens a very active and diverse commercial and finacial life which makes it modern and vibrating to the stares of the residents.
