Rustin Oct 5 Homecoming - 50/50 fundraiser contest and prediction experiment

in #contest6 years ago
Please help us show off Steem's potential in our community by supporting our quest to raise the funds to reimburse the band boosters for one band member's travel from Pennsylvania to Florida for this year's Citrus Bowl Parade.

For this post only, we are going to deviate from our usual practice of powering up all rewards in order to run a contest in recognition of Rustin's Homecoming game on Friday, October 5.

As posted here, the October 5 game is against Oxford High School. Like Rustin, Oxford is located in Chester County, PA.

Here are some stats:

Contest rules:

  1. Resteem this post.
  2. Upvote this post with at least 10% voting power.
  3. Comment below with the following information
    • (Required) Choose a number between 1 and 10,000
    • (Optional) Predict the winning team (or tie)
    • (Optional) Predict the total points scored
    • (Optional) Your other thoughts, research, and expectations about the game.
  4. Only your first valid comment will be eligible to win.
  5. Game time on Friday is at 7:00 pm (US/Eastern). Comments entered after that will be disqualified.
  6. @remlaps and @cmp2020 are not eligible to win.
  7. As is becoming customary, the game winner and final score will be published by this account on Steepshot on Friday. It can be confirmed on a variety of other web sites.
  8. After the post closes, we will announce the winner. After doing so, we will wait 7 days for challenges before transferring rewards. Challenges will be addressed in the comments.
  9. All liquid rewards from this post will be distributed to the contest winner(s).

Game predictions may be included in comments, so that we can see Steem in action as a crowd-prediction engine, but they will not be used to determine the contest winner(s). The contest winner(s) will be the account(s) that guess(es) closest to our preselected random number, which was generated on Linux like this:

 echo $(( ${RANDOM} % 10000 + 1 ))

In the event of a tie, the closest without going over will win. If it is still tied, the prize will be split among all matching guesses.

In order to experiment with Steem as a prediction engine, we would encourage you to vote for the comments that you think are close to correct for game predictions, but not to vote on comments after 7pm on Friday.

The number has already been selected. Here is its hash when sent through sha256sum along with some extra padding characters:

The actual number and surplus padding will be revealed after the post closes.

Sorry that the audio quality on my phone recording isn't great, but here is a video of the band playing the school's Alma Mater after the August 30 game at West Chester Henderson. The Alma Mater was composed by Samuel Barber. Be ready to turn the volume down!

And as one final reminder, here's what we're looking for in comments, before 7pm on Friday, Oct. 5.

  • (Required) Choose a number between 1 and 10,000
  • (Optional) Predict the winning team (or tie)
  • (Optional) Predict the total points scored
  • (Optional) Your other thoughts, research, and expectations about the game.

The @rgkmb-unofficial account is an experimental account that is operated by Steve Palmer (@remlaps). The account's purpose is to demonstrate the viability of a fund-raising model that is based on use of the Steem block chain in the community. The account's goal for 2018 is to raise enough money to send one student on the Rustin Golden Knight Marching Band's trip from Pennsylvania to Florida in December for performances in the Citrus Parade and in Disney. For more information, see our introductory post: Introducing Steem to the Rustin Golden Knights Marching Band

Thank you for your time and attention.

I'm not eligible for the contest, so I'm not submitting a number from 1-10,000.

But I'll make a guess at the football game. My game prediction is:

Rustin wins with 62 total points scored in the game.

Here is my reasoning. (i) MaxPreps shows that Rustin won this game last year, 42-34; (ii) Rustin beat Penn Wood two weeks ago, but despite their better record, Oxford lost to Penn Wood this year; and (iii) Since this year is Rustin's homecoming game, I'm going to guess that Oxford doesn't score quite as much as they did last year.

2 days left in the contest. Any takers? As of right now, the first entry might take it.

Upvoted.

Final score: Rustin over Oxford, 49-13. Steem prediction voters didn't have many guesses to choose from, but we nailed the winner and total score, anyway. ; -)

The number was 7338. but there were no guesses. : -( Thank you for the voting support, though.
