Jon's 1st Fiction Contest - Armistice - New and Improved With 35 SBD Prize Pool!

in #contest6 years ago (edited)

Pre-ramble

I've been at steemit for sixty-five days. I came to write fiction and poetry, to learn from people who knew their craft and hopefully share what bit of knowledge that I have. I came to escape the voluntary herd mentality I see on so many so-called social sites. I came to join the movement against and away from centralized control.

I came to join individuals. I don't care if they're like-minded - I prefer them to be independently minded in any way they choose. I came to escape the echo chamber created for me by massive corporations and government. My friends have their own minds and they can use them, whether online or in the real world. You guys - here on steemit - you are the reason I am here. Thank you, everyone.

And now, onward --->

The Contest

Write a story between 1000 and 1500 words on Armistice.

How you decide to interpret that is your business. Armistice Day is coming up November 11 and the subject just seems like a timely fit. (In the US they changed it to Veterans' Day - apparently Armistice Day was too... peaceful? But I digress.)

I am looking for fiction with a good storyline and character development. I don't want essays, or poetry, or anecdotes, or a history lesson, or anything other than well-developed fiction.

Don't be fooled into thinking that all these extra words will make this contest easier. It will not. It's one thing to keep a reader fascinated for a couple of pages - now you have to do it for at least twice that long.

Don't think that you have to limit yourself to something historical. You can choose any genre you like and write something about Armistice. Note I am not asking specifically for "Armistice Day."

I am the only judge in this contest and I want to fall into your story in the opening lines. I want it to keep me moving until I crash into The End and wish there was more. Do that, and your story is a contender.

This contest will payout within 48 hours of the deadline. It may be quicker than that but I want to allow enough time for me to read each story carefully and digest it. I think 48 hours should be adequate.

15 35 SBD Prize

There is one winner here. Mainly because I am reasonably poor at the moment. So, winner takes all.
Thanks to a seriously generous gift from @mikepm74 the contest has been funded for more levels of payout! Mike sponsored the first contest I ever entered on steemit and I am proud that he is helping fund this one. Thanks to Mike, the new prize levels are:

1st Prize = 15 SBD
2nd Prize = 10 SBD
3rd Prize = 5 SBD
4th Prize = 3 SBD
5th Prize = 2 SBD

Breakdown of the rules:

  1. Upvote and Resteem this post.
  2. Word count 1000-1500 words.
  3. Link to this post in your submission.
  4. Post the link to your story in the comments below.
  5. Contest Deadline is Midnight EST, November 11, 2017.
  6. Contest winners will be announced 48 hours after the contest closes.

Some Advice

You've got a week here, so don't rush this. I won't be judging any of the stories until the contest closes. Take advantage of that extra time. Edit and re-edit your story. Get another writer to read it and critique it and then edit it some more. Make every word, every comma - make every little thing count.

Grammar, spelling, the correct usage of the words you choose - all the mechanics of writing great fiction will be important. Check and re-check your story. In the end it may come down to just minute details. Make yours perfect.

Consider having your story critiqued by the folks at The Writers'Block. You'll find them to be concerned only with helping you make your story the best it can be. Speaking from experience I can tell you that your story has a better chance of winning after a thorough critique there. All of my winning stories were influenced by those guys. All of them. Their inputs are priceless.

I really like the fact that you have put effort and thought into seeing up the contest and I really like the topic you've chosen. I'm going to try and check out as many entries as I can :)

I've read some of their previous works - I'm excited to see what they send in. If you're so inclined, feel free to write one and submit it, too!

Glad you stopped by and commented! Resteemed your article on videos for contest posts. That is a great idea. I'll browse more tomorrow.

Don't look now, but I think some new guy is following you.

I don't think I have the writing chops or dedication to writing fiction to offering a worthwhile submission, but when I see an interesting topic like that, I'm sometimes still considering giving it a shot just for for fun.

I upvoted and resteemed this. It's a wonderful idea. And I very much like the subject. I wish I could enter but I have another project that needs to be prioritised. But I will be looking out for some great stories to come from this. <3

Thanks!

There's plenty of time if you change your mind!

It's not that I don't want to, Jon. I'm speaking at a symposium in two weeks and I just need to focus on that for now. But thanks. ;-)

Hopefully next time! And good luck on your speaking engagement - that seems much harder than a contest! 🌟

OK, it's done... and I'm now officially throwing my hat into the ring.

Please enjoy!

I believe I've checked all the boxes in the rules, but please advise if I've missed any?

And THANK YOU once again for this fine contest.

😄😇😄

@creatr

Thanks! I won't be reading any of the entries until Saturday at midnight - I'm excited to read it! First entry!

Thank you, Jon.

I truly hope you find it enjoyable. Have lots of fun starting Saturday night! ;)

I'm still struggling with migraines and not up to writing anything... and totally without an idea anyway. But I hope to soon be back to helping on the editing side in the block, for any who use that. But great initiative Jon!

I think the name change was done to make it a day for veterans of more wars.

Wish you were feeling better - not for the contest, just because you ought to be feeling better. And I think you are right. I think the idea of a general Armistice movement scares them. Here in the US, in any case.

Hey John, just noticed your contest. I will have an incoming piece... :-)

Excellent! Can't wait to read it!

Great! I'll be reading everything tonight - can't wait!

Great to see you running this contest @jonknight. I'll see what my mind conjures over the next couple of days. Love the subject too.

It's a new thing for me and I'm excited! Looking forward to reading what your awesome mind will conjure! Thanks!

Unfortunately the way my week is panning out I'm unlikely to get something down for this but I'll definitely be looking out for round 2. I look forward to reading the entries coming in for this round too!

Time can be a fiend!

Never relenting!

Here goes mine. Thanks for hosting this, Jon. :-) Got me writing about things I'd not thought about in too long....https://steemit.com/fiction/@authorofthings/airborne-contest-entry-for-jon-knight-s-armistice

This subject can bring out very passionate emotions - I'm glad you entered!

Stopping by to say multiple "Thank You's," Jon...

Thanks for a cool contest.
Thank you for pointing me to "The Writers' Block."
Thank you for the inspiration.

Your topic has (surprisingly) pulled a story out of me that is part of a theme that's moldered in the back of my mind, quite literally, for decades.

Today I wrote the story. I found The Writers' Block on discord. I've been energized, encouraged, and helped tremendously by the fine people there, and seriously educated in ways I never expected.

Multi thank you!

I'll be posting a link to my story here as soon as finishing touches are applied and I actually publish it...

😄😇😄

@creatr

There's nothing I can imagine reading that would make me feel any better right now than that comment. Looking forward to reading your story!

@jonknight,
Well here it is, finally!

Aren't You Tired Yet?

Thanks for the contest!
@Lymmerik

Fantastic! I'm looking forward to reading it!
