5 STEEM giveaway - What do you expect a Witness to do for STEEM?

in #contest6 years ago (edited)

First up ,

Winners from the last contest-

@just2random and @paintingangels , check your wallets fam !!

Something funny that happened last time - pure coincidence that @o07 and I submitted the same entry so technically that is my fav entry. Also I was following him for a long time and then I checked today I wasn't following him , I think it's a glitch and it has happened bunch of time for different people I follow , I digress !!

The idea for this contest comes from the comment convo I had with @meno in the below post:
https://steemit.com/teamaustralia/@itstime/how-much-do-steem-witnesses-get-paid-you-might-be-surprised-or-maybe-not

Contest rules this time

  1. Resteem this post
  2. Tell me the top 3 things you want a Witness to do for STEEM Blockchain , in order of priority , this can be anythign you want , this can be same as other people or something unique you want.

I will tell you the top 3 things I expect from Witnesses

Please follow the below format

  1. Primary or Co-founding some technical project/service for STEEM . ( reason- this is based on the assumption that running a node is not too technically challenging and I would really like to see some unique project being created/co-owned).

  2. Building a community. ( reason - as it is , the big drop off after initial sign-up is a big issue so anything that helps with user retention is important to me).

  3. Actively engages on STEEMIT - posts/comments/Dlive/anything.

other ideas worth considering , mix and match as you may like

  • Actively contributes to STEEM blockchain development.
  • Promoter for STEEM , brings STEEM to normies.
  • Speaks truth to power.
  • Simplifies STEEM concepts for everyone to understand.
  • Isn't shy to use flags to curb the shitposters.
  • is not just an avatar , a real person who you know

I encourage you to look at your current votes and see if your votes match your priority , I am going to do the same !!

edit : if you are wondering , what the heck is a witness , read this

Sort:

hey, @itstime.

Here are my Top 3:

  • While it is much more automated than it used to be, I still want a witness to know how to run their servers, troubleshoot, update, etc. I think not missing blocks and being available as quickly as possible when things go awry are still pretty important, even if they are freed up from most of it.

  • I definitely want community minded witnesses that are aware of the community needs. I think there's plenty of devs, and many are already witnesses. Those who have their finger on the pulse of those of us in the community are starting to show up, but they are still not as well represented in the Top 20 as I would like to see. There needs to be much more of a balance. Not necessarily 50-50, but closer to that than what I believe it is now would be better.

  • I want witnesses to take more of the initiative to bring about needed change. Not just some technical things, like some have done to get into a hardfork, but more community minded things. And, I want them to build enough consistence to actually do hard forks themselves, since we've got all of these devs. After going through a myriad of the third party apps available right now, I can count on half my hand the ones I use on a regular basis. So, I don't personally need more witness/dev apps. I might be in the minority on this, but I know I'm not the only one. And none of the apps I use regularly now are witnesses. One of them might be now, or shortly will be.

Thanks for your entry...

  1. Full disclosure
What other accounts do you own?
    What bots do you run?
And, if ever proven to not disclosing this info, banned for life from being a witness.
  2. Explain the inner workings of Steem, so anyone can understand.
Ex. 1 thing they do is maintain a price feed. Explanation usually given, it is how 1 SBD is maintained at $1. Huh? I'm a pretty smart person and have read quite a few posts trying to explain this, but let's get down to brass tacks. (I have no idea where that saying came from haha I will have to google it sometime...) How does changing your price feed affect the price of SBD? Now that SBD is no longer being printed, what is the purpose of the price feed? ...? ...?
  3. Do their job. #1 thing they get paid for is creating blocks. So, why put this as #3? Because I think the other 2 things are very important...

Number 1 is totally epic :)

How many witnesses do you think would be willing to fully disclose?

  • I know you would... :D

I would race to try to be the first!

A fair few I think, but certainly some would very much dislike this!

Tks for your entry Wizard bro..

1.-Unify the Steem Power. Currently this is not a decentralized platform as they want us to see it when a group has the power to shatter an account or make it grow that seems to depend on their mood, that’s the way it works in the real world. When a whale for no reason attacks an account, to whom can we ask for help? A use-case example @bunnypuncher who protects this account from abuse? Who explains why it’s being attacked? Don’t they have the right to become a whale too? Why can’t my post accumulate $ 1000? The Steem Power of the whales, same as mine, must be equally important. Also I should have a voice to defend myself without fear that the super power of this whales will neutralize me.

2.-Remove bots like Cheeta for example. It is not always appropriate when this bot puts the flag. This can be understood because it is not a human with criteria. There are also accounts that call themselves "cleaners" and they just are a group of boys playing being gods and do not respond to the expected level. Same way, we the little fish, are unprotected. All bots must disappear.

3.-Remove the flags. The community is not yet mature enough to have this option within reach. I have been attacked by fake accounts for no apparent reason. Other times I just seem to be someone's specimen. If there is any reason to mark a ticket negative, I should be able to write to an experts group mediators, and they will be responsible for evaluating whether or not my complaint proceeds. I have seen the abuse of whales, who controls them?

I’m a little fish and it is this disparity that makes me want to leave the platform most of the time. It has probably been the feeling of all who left their accounts.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express myself.

Thank you for your entry ,

if you can provide some examples where you felt you were treated unfairly , it would help make your case stronger.

What you need to consider for @bunnypuncher 's account case is , you can't just keep boosting to trending with low effort post , that is reciepe for getting flagged.

If you want to run contests and not boost to trending , in my understanding , that would never be flagged.

Would you be kind to explain that to him? He and all of us who participate in his contest want to know the reason for the flags. Than you, you so very kind. (I'm going to look for the post where I received negative)

Just copy paste it over to him...

The golden rule is-
If you boost your post to trending page , multiple times , it must not be a low effort post. I would deem the contest he was running as a low effort post.

The flag system is the same as giving a bureaucrat an army. If you don't want war then don't hand out weapons... But as this is a US based platform it will need to have a war machine included? Is that it?

What alternative control mechanism do you propose?

Mute percentages.
I mute you 50% and your commends fade 50% to grey

once 100 people mute you then your comments fade on other threads as well?
Group-muters auto-muters mutetubetrustedmuters will also be muted and muted longer the more they abuse the system
Still not ideal, but less agressive and more effective in the long run.
Also not linked to the votes. A flag system linked to the votes could be weaponised by mass flaggers to demonetize innocent people.
Some time ago I discussed muting with @palikari123 We had a few more idea's on this.
Muting could still lead to censorship when done wrong the main idea is to NOT mute people system wide but only to people who really don't want to read a hand full of really annoying people. With a well balanced mute those people can still write.
But be very carefull with this, when misunderstood or sloppy tuned this can be just as bad as flagging.
The best way to make people behave nice is still to REWARD good behavior instead of face slapping. But then the problem is how to spot good behavour. And how to spot scammers who exploit this. There never is a real solution is there... :-)

I don't know.
What does a witness do for us?
What kind of person is a witness?
Do i want to be friends with that kind of person?
Do witnesses read my articles?
How do i know if a witness is into upvoting shitposts?

I cant even vote on witnesses (i use busy.org since steemit is bullying me with a policy wall)

So would say, witnesses start reading my shit, comment on my shit, and earn that vote. I will not suck up to any witness just for being a witness.
And once the policy wall has gone I can have a look what witness has earned my vote.

something like that....

My opinions on this may change once i understand more about this, but for now this is my take on witnesses.

Eventhough the policy wall could be a bigger problem. :-)

You should read through all the comments..

if only busy.org did not hide them from me hehe ....i'll have a look

right on...

My top 3 expectations of Witnesses:

  1. I’d love to see regular reports on what they are doing for the community. I imagine the easiest way would be some kind of post (monthly maybe?) which has a basic outline of what each witness has done in past month and / or what are currently working on or will be doing in next month. And I say monthly, because I imagine some things take time, and that witnesses have things to do in real life away from Steem. Every 2 months? Quarterly?

  2. Actively developing the blockchain and services/projects. Infrastructure is what supports the community. What’s kept me here are projects like MSP, Steemit Ramble, Writers Block, etc. These communities run radio shows, discussion, support for newbies, and also the fun stuff in between that keeps people engaged. This could also include all the various cool apps - from dLive and dTube, to steemitworldmap, and steemnow.

  3. Do something about shitposts, spam, and bidbots. I guess this is a trickier issue, and perhaps there is a lot going on I don’t know about (which the regular missives would address, see point 1), but this is what prevents Steem from taking off, and would also address the issues should this scale upwards. The other social media platforms are crap because of all the spam and shitposts and advertising and advertorial. I want to use social media for coming together with others and sharing ideas, stories, art, and creative content in general.

Anyway, these are my 3 expectations. Maybe there is lots going on behind the scenes that I don’t know about, in which case I’d love to know about them.

Looking forward to see what comes of this.

Quick reply-
check this
https://steemit.com/@witnessupdate

and the monthly witness call @aggroed holds and posts on @msp-waves

I plan to post a TLDR of that call on regular , like this one

https://steemit.com/teamaustralia/@itstime/tldr-version-steem-witness-forum-part-2

there is also a monthly Witness Chat for ALL witnesses held on the Steemit Ramble. It was held yesterday with sixteen witnesses present. The next one is September 15th. at 11am EDT

Can you please drop link to the last one ?

here is the recording from the last Witness Chat .. the next one is September 15
https://steemit.com/witness/@shadowspub/finally-the-witness-chat-recording-from-august-18th

Thanks @itstime and @shadowspub. I guess a subset to point 1 is.... let folk know about those also 😉.

I was thinking along the lines of a newsletter/missive. Something like a curated post, links to posts that outline current project, that sort of thing.

I’m aware of the radio shows, can’t make it all the time, just because, you know, life.

makes sense

Quality is in the eye of the beholder?
Shitpost suck, but some people appear to enjoy them, who are we to deny them that pleasure. :-D

...Let It Be - John Lennon

delete all shitposters from your followers list

So there are shit posts which are low effort , goofy , selfie zoned - all of those are cool and I don't think anyone ever flags them.

Then there are shitposters who copy paste stuff from internet and boost it to trending , that's the main issue.

Copyright is history as everything is a remix anyway.
This is extremely difficult to deal with.
Any recipe of any dish IS a remix, yet i see LOTS AND LOTS of crap foodie posts that are copy pasted and some even so bad translated that it could be dangerous to eat.
:-)

Thanks bro :-D
Finding decent channels to watch on YouTube is sometimes finding quality content on Steemit ;-)

And you've really opened up a pandora's box with this question.

Although this isn't an official entry into this comp I like to see witnesses.

  1. Pay their server bills

  2. Re-invest their extra SP into the community, by supporting projects, creating new ones and taking a selfless-approach to the Steem Community.

  3. Step outside their circle jerks and look for other opportunities to support new Steemians as they are really the ones that have the enthusiasm to drive us forward.

What they shouldn't do: I don't believe a Top 20 witness should own a voting bot. EVER!

Tks for your entry...cheers !!

Managing a witness is a fairly time consuming task all on its own. Of course when have it running and it's chugging along it's fine but there are so many changes and future plans to be on top of, as we've seen with the most recent upgrades. And let's not forget about the cost, of course. That said, this is pretty much the baseline for all witnesses, so just maintaining the basic witness box package isn't enough. Here's my three:

  1. Focus on the stability of the STEEM ecosystem. Deep understanding of all parts of the mechanisms like conversions, print rate, debt ratio, etc, witness settings... Upcoming things happening with resource credits, account creation, etc. There are quite a lot of toggles to play with, and we need to make sure we are careful with how that affects the whole economy.
  2. Focus on any efforts that will bring adoption and keep retention, as that is really how steem will survive as an economic system. This does mean monitoring and taking a stand on how the reward pool is allocated. But also encouraging curation and community growth that help retention.
  3. Focus on ways that the currencies can be used as a currency, e.g. value transfer. In part, organic voting already does some of this as we are effectively tipping for engagement (very roughly), but initiatives targeted at potential merchants I suspect are going to get us a big jump as well. Caveat: I don't count paying for votes here necessarily because it's an extension of the reward pool allocation.

On the side, I think bonus points for those running services that enable others to accomplish the three above would go a long way, so I'd look for that too.

@eonwarped tks for the detailed comment ..I agree with almost all of your points...

This is not to say some don't do this already, but this is my expectation for anyone who would want to be a witness.

1.- They need to be focused in two fronts. One would be oriented towards development, mass adoption and what have you, and a second one towards community and user retention.

2.- they need to stay engaged with their fellow steemians. via chat, regular posts, etc. If they seem like they don't exist, even if they are working behind the curtains 24/7 is not good for the morale of the platform.

3.- all top 20 witnesses i would vote for would have to be running a full node or a project of the same magnitude. They are not required, but i would expect them to operate this way, as they should understand the importance to do so, and could foot the bill at that point in time.

would vote for would have to be running a full node or a project of the same magnitude

Not being much of a resteemer will leave me out of the contest, however, please allow me to present a proposition put forward in an old blog post of mine; which outlined a sysyem to help abate the production of counterfeit STEEM through non-Proof of Brain upvoting.

A link to my post is included below for your reading pleasure.

Tks for your comment homie...

Don't enter me in the contest, but here is my view on witnesses.

  1. Solve the blocks when it is your turn in rotation
  2. Be able to read and verify code, this is extremely important as the witnesses are our defense against bad code, hacking, etc.
  3. Since we have so many and they spend so much time talking about themselves and what they need and want...

I look for engaged, developers, or builders of the community and projects.

I ignore witnesses that only talk about "Witness Issues". I don't vote for those who complain without action, and those who bad mouth Steem and SteemIt, Inc. (because you don't shit where you eat, and the non-stop complaining is bad for my investment)

My favorite witness is timcliff, he codes, he reads code and he acts as a liaison between the community, SteemIt, Inc and other developers. He does it without passing judgment on those with a different vision. He is a class act in all that he does.

I appreciate @timcliff as well ..been voting for him since I read his detailed responses to witness critical posts

because you don't shit where you eat
