RE: The Psychology Of Control: The Stanford Social Media Thought Prison Experiment

I often wonder how much of this is manipulated and how much is just allowing human nature to do its thing. Are they manipulating things a certain way or do they just watch the petty squabbles develop and sit back while we do their work for them? That prison experiment is just one instance that shows how easily we can fall into the moral superiority trap. We can't help ourselves. Being important makes us feel good.

It's very difficult to quantify an answer to that question in one comment .. it's a huge subject and one that I have been researching for thirty years. It's my belief that over a long period of time our perceptual reality has been manipulated and inverted, indeed our perception of power is that of control and subjugation, but as I wrote recently "control is no measure of power, it is an imposter and a lie". Our semantics have also been distorted and in essence, the meaning we place upon self and the world at large. The thought forms/beliefs that we derive from certain words (or patterns of word) act akin to an intrinsic control system; manipulating perception and defining the boundaries of the possible. When you see how people react during disasters etc etc the immediate knee-jerk reaction is to help .. that is what I believe is the natural essence of our humanity but that our true path has been subverted by the message that society whispers into our ears from childhood .. dog eat dog, survival of the fittest etc etc etc. Thanks again @minismallholding

dog eat dog, survival of the fittest etc etc etc

Another comparison to dogs is we're kind of like beaten dogs that have learnt to go against their instincts out of fear. With so much being illegal we can be torn between assisting and fear of reprisal for breaking a law. Since the decline of communities where we knew everyone it's now easier for us to turn away from someone who needs help because we don't know them. So there's another indication of possible manipulation which plays on our natural instincts.
