RE: “Read a Damn Book – 145: The Avengers – Marvel Masterworks Volume 1”
This is a very thorough review. It provides young Marvel fans, unfamiliar with the comics, with a great historical comparison of how the characters have evolved.
It also provides a great overview of how societal changes and people's expectation affect the way pop culture is adapted and represented in modern media.
People often times overemphasize the role the media plays in modifying people's behavior but we rarely pause to observe how people can also influence how the media is run and what kinds of representations become acceptable.
Comics are fun, no question about it. And the old comic books, more than anything, demand readers to really suspend disbelief and just go along with the bizarre plots.
Thanks! And, yeah... Willing suspension of disbelief was essential! But if you COULD let go of reality, these stories are a lot of fun!
