Theyyam - a ritual art
The word Theyyam means God & the ritual (not art) with intricate face paintings, movements etc is older than organized religions of the recent times.
Theyyam (theyyattam) is a ritual dance form popular in northern Kerala, India. Theyyam is normally performed in temples/Kavu/kOOttam mostly in Kannore and Kasrgode districts in few places in Kozhikode district. The name theyyam is derived from the malayalam name for God (daivam). During the ritual the artist is considered as God and they complain ask for blessings as if they are talking to God.
This photo is taken at a temple where the ritual was conducted after 31 years.
One of the most important things about this theyyam is the feminine looks, movements & eyes. The theyyam was gentle and fierce at the same time.
Theyyam is not a representation or representative of God, but Theyyam is considered to be God himself.

Trivia: This is probably one of my most recognized photos and due to the free license, this is used to represent Theyyam, wikipedia, Harvard university, NOGs, Government organizations etc. I never expected this photo to become so famous and a common sight like it has become - thanks to the creative commons licensing.
