How I Control Overthinking
Overthinking used to run my entire day. One small decision — like what to post, what to reply to a comment, even what game to play — would turn into fifteen minutes of back and forth in my head. If you've dealt with this, you know how exhausting it actually is, way more tiring than the decision itself deserves.
The first thing that helped me was realizing overthinking isn't really about the decision. It's about fear of getting it wrong. Somewhere in my head I convinced myself that every choice needed to be perfect, and that mindset alone created this loop where I'd analyze something from every angle instead of just doing it.
What actually broke the cycle was setting small time limits for myself. If it's a minor decision, I give myself like two minutes max to decide and move on. Sounds simple, almost too simple, but forcing a deadline on your own brain stops it from spiraling. Most decisions genuinely aren't as high stakes as overthinking makes them feel.
Another thing that helped — writing thoughts down instead of just replaying them in my head. When something's stuck on loop mentally, it feels huge and unmanageable. But the second I actually type it out or write it on paper, it shrinks. It becomes a normal-sized problem instead of this vague heavy thing following me around all day.
I also had to accept that not every outcome is fully in my control. A lot of my overthinking used to come from trying to predict how something would turn out — will this post do well, will people respond a certain way, will this decision backfire. But you can prepare and think it through reasonably, and after that, the rest is just not yours to control anymore. Holding onto it past that point is just wasted energy.
Physical movement helps too, more than I expected. When I catch myself spiraling on something, getting up and walking around, even just for a few minutes, breaks the mental loop way faster than trying to think my way out of it while sitting still.
Honestly the biggest shift was just accepting that some level of uncertainty is normal. I used to think overthinking meant I was being careful or responsible. Now I see it more as my brain trying to control things it can't actually control. Once I stopped treating uncertainty like a problem to solve, it got a lot quieter up there.
Still not perfect at this, some days the loop comes back stronger than others. But knowing the pattern now makes it easier to catch early instead of getting fully pulled in.
Anyone else deal with this a lot? Curious what actually works for you.
