Bulletproof Coffee at Whole Foods - Product Review

in #coffee6 years ago

👉 Product review of the infamous Bulletproof Coffee. This fat indulged coffee brew has gained mass adaptation due to the effort Dave Asprey put into this drink. The idea is that the fat in the coffee (grass-fed butter) is used as a source of energy. So you burn fat instead of glucose from carbs.

Before I was able to lay my hands on the "original" Bulletproof, I've made my own versions at home, back in Amsterdam. Being in San Francisco, I just had to try the real deal! It made it all much easier to get because recently Bulletproof coffee started retailing at Whole Foods.

I'm not sure what to think of drink fat. It goes against everything I've learned about fat. I'd love to figure out a way to test this. If you have any recommendations, please comment down below!

OK, been doing keto for about a year now, and a variant of bullet proof coffee as part of it. Just today, I quit putting coconut oil and cream in my coffee, here is why...

I have changed to more of IF and very low carb than strict keto, and what this guy said made enough sense for me to give up my fatty coffee. If you are doing JUST keto, it is great. If you are thinking JUST drinking this will make you burn fat you have bad information, it is only PART of a fat burning diet that REQUIRES low carbs - REALLY low carbs, or you will just pad your butt and belly.

Ok, I really appreciate you commenting on this! But the video is WAY above my vocabulary. I do want to understand it. I kinda get the Keto part; you can't half-ass a fat burning diet. But a lot of words I hear in this video are just too advanced, haha.

Do you have any tips on more entry-level content?

Well, there are two things that are often done together, keto and IF. For keto, I did 20 carbs or less per day, a ratio of roughly 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbs is what I did although I ate a HUGE salad every day and did not count those carbs. (Dr. Eric Berg on youtube was who I was following, mostly.)
It takes a while to "keto-adapt" - start burning fat full time, a couple days usually. Every cheat puts you back to square one, so COMMIT or skip it. If you do this, at first you will find it very hard to get enough fat into your diet. Like you noted, it is totally against what we have been told. That is why I started bulletproof(ish) coffee, heavy cream and coconut oil is what I used.
Then I ADDED IF - Intermittent Fasting, which is basically taking advantage of the 8 hours or so of "fasting" while we sleep and just pushing it, keeping you in "fat burning mode." We actually dip into a mild keto state when we sleep, and we can keep burning fat until we eat, so you stretch that as far as you can without suffering. I find it very easy to eat my first meal about 2 PM most days. The extreme version of IF is OMAD, one meal a day. The more time you fast versus time you spend eating, the more it pushes your body to metabolize fat rather than carbs.
OK, so in comes my PhD buddy, in the video. He has a lab, actually does the tests himself. Look at him, he is not a flabby guy. He says the fats in the coffee, though NOT carbs, still "break" your fast because your brain recognizes it as nutrition and begins to send the metabolic hormones out. Understand I started this mostly due to insulin resistance, not to lose weight. I am more concerned about tripping the insulin production, it just happens to be the same mechanism that puts you into carb-metabolism mode rather than fat burning.
The compromise I decided to make was black coffee in the morning, and a nice, rich bulletproof cup before I eat. That got pretty wordy... sorry lol! One more thing, though... You are on the right track IMO. Did you know babies come into this world in ketogenic metabolism? As long as they breast feed only, they STAY in ketogenic metabolism? It is almost like it is how nature intended us to live...

Thank you for this elaborate feedback! I've considered KETO but I'm very light weight/skinny so I never been sure if I could pull it off.

I've been experimenting with IF since the beginning of this year. I agree that pushing the fast upon wake up is ideal for me. When I do IF I instantly notice an energy boost which at first felt counter-intuitive. Would you be able to explain how that energy boost occurs? Super curious!

So no more BPC unless I'll go KETO, correct? What about during IF my first consumption (for me around 11am when I wake at 7am) is BPC? No good right?

Thanks again for taking the time to explain!

I am still playing around with all this myself, but what I am doing (for just my second day today!) is having my BPC to break my fast, about 1:30 for me, I usually eat around 2. I just love my fatty coffee, it is my "treat" now. But it is calories, and if I want to keep my fasting time as effective as possible, it makes sense to put no calories on board - not even pure fat.
And bear in mind I am not a nutrition, diet or health expert! My understanding is that fat metabolism is FAR more efficient. The advice to get up and shove hashbrowns and toast in our face first thing in the morning is REALLY bad - we are in fat burning mode - high energy output - and then we throw carbs on the fire that are like wet wood. Sure, it burns, but it smokes and sputters compared to the fat flame. If you are insulin resistant that would be exaggerated, low quality carbs are like narcotics to me lol! Try Thomas DeLauer on youtube, he is another one I watch a lot and he is more about general fitness. Berg is about STRICT keto for specific health issues. I watch them both, and try to pick the info that applies to my situation best I can.
Let me know how you do with this, I think you are going to be very happy with your health long term.

I hope you enjoy your Bulletproof Coffee I try it next time

OK ENJOY! AND THNX FOR COMMENTING IN CAPS ✌️😂

Mmm, if it is as advertised, it may be one of the best coffees, but does it taste tasty?
