"Holika Dahan" before Holi - The Ritual
Hello Steamians….. In India, it is the time of Holi festival. the festival of Colour and Love celebrated across the nation. People smear colour on each other to mark the day and make a lot of fun.
Many of us are familiar that the festival is celebrated to mark the beginning of Spring season and ends of Winter. The ritual that occur a day before the Holi festival, is called “Holika Dahan” which marks the victory of Good over Evil. There is a mythological event that make the ritual more important.
All about Holika dahan
Going by the ancient story Holika Dahan is associated with the burning pyre of “Holika” the sister of king Hirnyakashipu. The story is all about the power of devotion by Prahalad over the evil power represented by Hirnyakahipu and his sister Holika.
Prahalad the son of Hirnyakashipu was a devoted worshipper of Lord Vishnu, He has strong faith on Vishnu and his different avatar. On the other hand, Prahalad’s father, Hirnyakashipu the king of demons is completely against Vishnu and his son for dedicatedly following Vishnu. He strongly condemns Prahalad for worshipping Lord Vishnu.
He was very much agitated by Prahalad devotion that he decided to kill Prahalad, he made many unsuccessful attempt, one such event was putting Prahalad inside the burning pyre.
Holika , the sister of Hirnyakashipu had the divine power of not getting burned by Fire, Seeing her brother agitated, Holika offered him that she will take Prahalad along with her into the wooden pyre, and as she has the power, and she will get out of the fire unharm
Taking this evil thought she tricked Prahalad to come along with her in the pyre. However, after some time the fire engulfs her completely. As per the power she had, she should not use her power to bring harm anyone, which she did with the purpose of harming Prahalad.
The Ritual
The ritual of burning pyre marks the victory of Good over Evil. Even today we do the rituals. The occasion is celebrated by litting the wooden pyre after sunset.
Wooden blocks and other easily combustible material are assembled and gathered in park, open spaces etc.
On sunset, people worship the pyre bonfire followed by singing and dancing and taking taking parikrama along the bonfire. The occasion has just been completed in my apartment. I have made a collage of few of the Pics which I am sharing with you all.
