大家都说独角兽为神话传说中的一种生物，是虚构的。

西方神话中，独角兽则形如白马，额前有一个螺旋角，形态高贵、高傲，而且纯洁。甚至说还长有一双翅膀，更奇异者是黑色的。独角兽在现实世界的原型已被认为是犀牛。
在东方，中国古代传说里的䑏疏（《山海经·西山经》）是一种独角兽。还有一种独角兽——龙马。龙马是一种吉祥之物，它只有在履行重要使命时才出现。它的出现被人们视为美好时代的象征，预示世间太平，人间长寿。
美国著名Cowboy Venture投资人Aileen Lee，在2013年将私募和公开市场的估值超过10亿美元的创业公司做出分类，并将这些公司统称为“独角兽”。Cowboy Venture属于种子轮基金。
所谓的独角兽企业，通常是指成立不超过十年、接受过私募投资、估值超过10亿美元、发展速度快、市场中企业数量少的初创型企业。
