In This Era of Rising Populism, the Global World and Our Planet Needs Everyone NOW

in #climate6 years ago (edited)

In an era of always increasing braggadocio and a return to partisan and right wing values, centered around protectionism and nationalism, self-perseverance first, our planet and our future needs EVERYONE to collaborate more than ever before.

Earlier today the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Released it’s by the Paris climate agreement commissioned climate change report and the truth is that we have little time anymore. (Easy explainer over at the Conversation)

Definitely not enough time to let bulldogs like Trump or the possible potential new President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro weaponize self-interest and the climate against the rest of the world.

Jair Bolsonaro wants to open the Amazon to more agriculture rather than reforest it.

While it is understandable that in times of “Abundance” not yet reaching the bottom tiers, everyone wants a job and economic safety, we should not allow that our future, and the future of everyone’s offspring is hostage to the bravado of few thickheads egos who care more about their own legacy - good or wrong, as long as it is a legacy - than the potential wellbeing of everyone and our planet.

The space which feeds us.

Such changes, as recommended by the IPCC’s report, which highly recommends that we need to stay within 1.5 degrees of global warming, even not the max. 2 degrees as targeted by the Paris climate agreement, will only be possible if every player involved understands that .self will ruin everything, eventually also taking down that what they tried to protect in the first place.

Combined with the movement of continental masses, it is highly possible that mega cities and metropolises will flood first because of their sheer weight pushing down the land they are built on and making them ever more a target to the rising oceans. Not to mention floods due to the lack of trees in many places.

While countries like the Netherlands have mastered the art of living below the sea level, also thanks to the creation of ever larger floodplains, their situation and evolution may not be applicable in places like New York, Shanghai or Sydney which aims to build 725,000 new habitats by 2036 as part of it ambitious “A Metropolis of Three Cities” plan - which does not consider rises of sea levels.

If we want to get rid of that nagging feeling of guilt perfectly expressed by @tarazkp, it is time to act.

Sometimes, I look at the world my wife and I have chosen to bring a child into and question how selfish we are to have created an innocent life, and be almost powerless to improve the world in which she lives.

Act now and act all together.

Which, also, requires that we ditch our shortsighted .self focus and embrace a future together, a future of a healthy planet without any borders.

A future of one global nation.

Saving the climate and our planet, the source of our food, is the biggest task ahead of us. Intellectually challenged egos have no right to define our future and that of our planet. As long as we keep supporting those short term “visionaries”, we only further dig our own hole rather than create dikes and reduce pollution. Their swamp has a different agenda.

Climate Change isn’t a hoax.

Hi @fknmayhem, Though, this is a very well-written research based article that addresses a very serious issue the world is encountered with but the bitter truth is that people are more interested in Kardashians.

Only if we don’t make any noise will they never hear nor care.
