Downtown LA

Downtown LA

Cityscape view of one of my favourite cities in the world. I've been to LA a couple of times now, and it's one of those places that instantly feels comfortable and like home.

When I was a teen I dreamed of moving to LA and pursuing my dream of working on movies, but unfortunately that never happened. Instead I moved to London where I worked in movies for 8 years before moving to Japan with my wife where I now work as a full time stock photographer.

I've been able to visit LA about once a year recently, and hope to go back again soon.

How does one apply to work with Getty Images?
Lately I've seen photos from a singer I like which are only available through there.

Anyways, what a great shot, Jon!! :D

Hey @rick1- Sorry just to clarify. You took photos of a singer that you would like to sell? Is the singer famous or is it a friend? These are all different factors to include when selling with Getty/ iStock.

Usually the best way is to go to the website workwithus.gettyimages.com (but currently this site is down for maintenance- it's due to be back up in about a month).

So there are two main types of Getty account Editorial and Creative. With an editorial account you can upload photos of famous singers, BUT generally these are from events they will have asked you to go and photograph and you will have to have press passes etc. IF you have a press pass for an event you could contact them and say that you have photos of (insert famous band here). Editorial includes things like red carpet events, openings of famous buildings, festivals and music performances (anything that is considered news).

Creative account is where you sell images to be licensed for advertisements. For this any images featuring people will have to be model released. So if you took a photo of Lady Gaga for example you would need her to sign a model release before you could sell it. If the singer is your friend then you could get them to sign a model release then this isn't an issue. But you would also need a property release from the venue that they played at.

Getting a creative account is much easier than getting an Editorial account to be honest.

Another option is Getty's sister company iStock. workwithus.istockphoto.com (also currently under maintenance). This website is for creative content to be licensed for advertising. etc. I wrote a post about stock photos recently if you are interested to learn more.
