In Germany Christmas Eve is when the gift giving happens. That doesn't leave much time for cooking and eating (and there will be more than enough to eat the next days) so the traditional meal in my childhood was potatoes salad and wiener sausages. The salad can (and should) be prepared the day before and the sausages only need to put into hot water.

I always thought that Germans have a bigger Christmas Eve celebration. But I like how it's kept simple, and especially when you can (and must) prepare things in advance, less pressure on the day!
We are the same with gifts, the gift-giving happens on Christmas Eve, although it's not a very strict rule :D
