Abi and I will be heading home to see our families soon so we’re becoming a little excited. Today’s question sparked some memories of Christmas food and being grateful.

When my three younger siblings came into the world, their arrival coincided with my dad’s business taking a downturn. As he and my mom talked they decided to do whatever it took for her to continue homeschooling us kiddos.

That decision meant that we lived through some lean years as a family. Dad took on some part time gigs while mom asked more of me to help run the household. I am thankful for that time.

One of our fondest memories was when mom starting asking us what foods we wanted for a grocery bag. Being young growing boys meant that we were always eating, and having our favorite foods at our favorite time of the year was a win win.

It was nothing extravagant, just a plain grocery bag filled with snacks we individually enjoyed. My bags normally contained Dark chocolate mints, salt and vinegar chips, and some Bugles.

We often tease each other that most of our memories are food memories. However, that is part of the joy of being together as a family is good food, and laughter.

How about you? What are some of your favorite Christmas memories?

When i taught we used to do a canned food drive for Christmas - we had a staff competition to see whose students could bring in the most canned foods. One colleague had an in with a food store, but I was determined to try to appeal to my students' generosity and Christmas spirit regardless. One day I showed the class an excerpt from Bill Murray's Scrooged - that tipped the scales and we actually brought in the most non-perishable food items. It made me feel good to see all of the staff and students pull together. In the end, an 18 foot tractor trailer was required to haul away the contributions and take them to the local food bank. I think everybody won when it came to giving.

Wow! That's a lotta food... :D

I'm sorry I missed this... Please respond so I may reward it.

One of my favorite Christmas memories is spending Christmas at my aunt and uncle's home in Connecticut. My sister and I would sleep in sleeping bags, but I would toss and turn all night in anticipation of Christmas morning... Opening stockings and then Christmas presents. I was all about the science toys and things to make... Mr. Machine, for example, and water propelled rockets.

😄😇😄

Feeding that scientific curiosity. Good memories. :)

Merry Christmas, Lydon, to you and all your loved ones! :D
