How Should A Christian Comment On Social Media ?

The way we comment on social media goes a long way in showing who we really are. There are times where I have been tempted to drop a harsh comment to someone who offended me here on Steemit, but I have always found ways to restrain myself.

Comments can easily be careless and destructive . That’s why we must heed Jesus’s warning: “on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak” (Matthew 12:36). This goes a long way in showing that commenting is a serious business to God.

How Should We Comment?

The Bible tells us to talk less and slowly: “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19).

If an article or post online makes you angry, you should almost never write in the heat of irritation. In that frame of mind it is very difficult to “be gentle [and] show perfect courtesy toward all people” (Titus 3:2).

There was a time I corrected a Minnow here on Steemit, who was spamming poeple's post with the same comments, he replied me with a barrage of Insults, contrary to his expectations I did not abuse him or flag him, I gently expalained to him the dangers of Spamming here on Steemit

He later apologised and deleted his previous comment and we became friends

You should also learn to comment Graciously: “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (Colossians 4:6).

There are some people who rarely engage or read what the post is saying, the next thing you would see in the comment section is :

Nice Post, Please Follow Me

You should take time to read a post before commenting and also read post you understand so that you would know how to contribute significantly to the conversation

You can appreciate the Author : Giving thanks may actually be the best and most frequent reason we should comment. If the post increased your understanding or Knowledge in a particular matter, then expressing your gratitude is appropriate and it also helps motivate the writer to do more.

The post does not have to be perfect.

You should learn to Encourage: We humans generally find it easier to criticize each other than to encourage each other. There are almost easily a hundred critics for every encouraging person. As gospel people who seek to give grace, Christians can use comments to encourage and build up a writer and other readers (1 Thessalonians 5:11). Look for and identify the grace in an article or post.

Work with Clarity: If You don't understand what a post is saying, then the first thing you have to do is to ask clarifying questions, rather than immediately jumping to conclusions. A kind and insightful question might reveal the writer’s mistake or a reader’s misunderstanding.

Say No To Fires

In closing, let us remember this sober word from the apostle James:

The tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. (James 3:6)

James wrote this warning to Christians. Some Christians set fires in comment threads. Let us not set fires through careless words for which we will be held accountable.

There will always be people and trolls online to attack you, but do not descend to their level and trade abuses with them

Rather, let us restrain our lips/fingers, and when we do speak, may it only be to give grace to those who hear.

Hello @progressivechef

We must never tire to educate people on the right way to act because they will always be new people here on steemit and they will always need our guidance.

@ogochukwu

Very enlightening Colossians 4:6.
Be gracious, seasoned with salt!
The salt that gives flavor to a dish and makes a meal savory, this salt is Christ in our speaking! He is our speaking, so we can converse with anyone with grace and peace. :)

He later apologised and deleted his previous comment and we became friends

What a perfect example of what you are writing about here. Words of grace will go much further to conflict resolution than a harsh reply.

Well done, brother.

Yes @lydon.sipe

I have resolved never to quarrel with anyone on Steemit.

@ogochukwu

I've always believed that God is more concerned with what you say than how you say it (I hope or I'm in deep doo doo)

Ha Ha @richq11

A sad truth is that I've met more people who do not call themselves Christian who behave in the ways that the Christ of the Bible speaks about, then those who claim to follow him. But there are a few examples on this platform of non-judgmental, encouraging Christians such as yourself, @verbal-d and @papa-pepper, and I appreciate you.

Though I've given up labels long ago, I do still believe that the correct interpretation of the scriptures in the Gospel or a good way to live. In particular, love your neightbor as you love yourself.
Much love to you-

Hello @dreemit

Thank you for dropping by and reading my post.

Christianity is a lifestyle and not a religion, I say this because most Christians behave the right way on church days and then forget about their christian lives on other days.

Christian means Christ-like and that behaviour of Christ should be made evident in our actions.

Beautiful advice, brother, clearly and graciously presented. Thank you!

Hello @creatr

Thanks for reading and your kind words.

@ogochukwu

Totally agree with your sharing @ogochukwu . I never comment a post unless I really have read it through, otherwise I will let them know that I will return later.
People think that doing those "short cuts" will earn them something (in SP or SDB) but it hurts in the long run. A lot just do not understand that. Maybe it is the language, maybe they try to act as if they know.
Those who usually do that are from places where English is not the primary language.
I actually do not mind if people use even google translate to read my post and reply later in their language, because I can always use google translate.
People here who has less knowledge of this place intention and treat it as a money tree surely should read this post of yours, be it Christian on non Christian!

Good post. The Bible says that the tongue can cause a forest fire when unleashed in an angry outburst. Obviously the opposite also is true,. A soft answer turneth away wrath.
