What Does It Mean "To Lose One's Life" For Christ?

Matthews 16:25; KJV:For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Most people including christians misconstrue "losing one's life for Christ" to mean living in poverty and lack. They have this funny understanding that Christians are not supposed to enjoy the good things of this world because our time here is temporal and as a result of that, we should always be heavenly conscious. Does living a good life or having the good things of life prevents anyone from being heavenly conscious?

This class of people or Christians that have equated Christianity with suffering or pernury, are very quick to criticize or talk ill of anyone that claims to be a christian but has the world's goods at his/her disposal. To them, such a person is not heavenly conscious, but earthly and material conscious. And they hardly regard such a person to be a "true Christian" regardless of who the person is in the christendom.

The question I would want to ask here is, "does God actually wants Christians (his sons and daughters) to live in lack or poverty? The answer to that question is "NO". God endorses the prosperity of his children. He wants us to enjoy the earth and live the best possible life on earth. If he wanted us to live in suffering, he wouldn't have placed the good things you see on the earth. He made everything for our enjoyment.

If God wants us to truly enjoy this world to the fullest, what then does it mean to "lose one's life to christ?"

The answer to the above question is very simple and direct. Losing one's life for Christ has nothing to do with poverty, suffering or lack like most of us were made to believe. It simply means "handing over the wheel of your life to christ". It is that decision we take to submit our will to God regardless of our statuses or conditions in life.

The WILL of a man, makes the man. Thus, the very moment any man decides to submit his/her Will to God by giving God total control of the wheel of his/her life, that man has losed his/her life to Christ. The status or condition of the person is not what is important but who guides the person's life. Any man that makes christ the center of his/her life and lives their daily lives to please God, is losing his/her life for Christ.

The word "lose" that is used in the scripture above doesn't mean that the person is deprived from enjoying the good things of this life. It simply implies that the person has placed christ as the standard by which he/she is going to live his/her life. And no man can lose his/her life to christ and get lost in life. When christ controls the wheel of your life, he maneuver's every danger along your way and ensures that you arrive at your destination safely. Your arrival at both your earthly and eternal destination is guaranteed when christ is in charge of your life.

I've seen men with money, fame and power engage in self destructive acts that consumed them. I've also seen men with neither money, fame nor power also engaged in self destructive acts that consumed them. Do you know what these categories of men have in common? They all lack the presence of Christ in their lives. They all thought that they could save their lives if only them are on the wheel. But sadly for them, they are all ending bad regardless of their statuses or conditions.

God will never lead you to a wrong path or drive your life recklessly when you put him in charge. He'll always ensure that you are safe and secured and get you safely to your earthly and eternal destination. Your safe arrival at your destination can only be guaranteed when christ is in control of your life. That was why christ said in our scriptural reference above that "whosoever loses his life for my sake, shall find it". Hand over your wheel to christ if you want to have a safe journey and landing.

No, Jesus was talking about real, genuine persecution. The Apostles James and Stephen both died for their faith early enough for it to be recorded in the Bible.

God doesn't promise us prosperity or wealth. God's biggest desire for his children is that they would be like his Son. It take trials for us to grow spiritually.

(James 1:2-4 NIV) Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, {3} because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. {4} Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
