Some people see the Law as merely a temporary stopgap to atone for sin Until Jesus’ coming. But, In fact Godsplan for redeeming humanity Is foreshadowed In the Law. Jesus’ coming was part of that plan, a foretold by the prophets.

Indeed God’s plan is accomplished through the life and ministry of Jesus. And since the Law and His coming are both part of God's plan, the Law will endure through the end of time (verse 18).

QUESTION: Does this mean we’re still required to fulfil all the commands of the Moses Law? Why or why not?

Jesus’ words In verse 19 are clear: We must honour the Law’s commands. But these commands need to be seen in light of what He has said in verses 17 and 18. Since the Law pointed to the life and ministry of Jesus, He fulfilled it and defined how it is to be observed. In other words, we honour the Law by obeying His teachings.

(B) Intended For True Righteousness (Matthew 5:20)

QUESTION: What do you think Jesus meant when He said our righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees? How is this possible?

Through His life and teachings, Jesus pointed toward the definition of righteousness the Law had always intended. It wasn’t merely a matter of outward appearances and religious activities. True righteousness is a matter of the heart, motivated by love. That’s why the Pharisees righteousness was inadequate. They refused to accept Jesus an His teachings as their standard for living.

Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus called us to live with our hearts and minds set on His kingdom. True righteousness penetrates our whole being, inside and out. Jesus made this clear with some very specific examples in the verses that follow.
