History Behind Chopstick

“Kuai-zi” or “Hashi” are different names of chopsticks in different regions of Asia. After some research, in the book Chopsticks; A Cultural and Culinary History (2015), Wang (the author) mentioned the first pair of chopsticks were found in Longqiuzhunag, modern day Jiangsu. In their archaeological report, those par of stick are 18 centimeter long. You might ask, how were the researcher able to classify those sticks as chopsticks rather than an ordinary stick. Those sticks were tampered to be thicker in the middle with a square-shaped top. Additionally, they were sharpened off. These sign were the proof that those artifacts were in fat, chopsticks.

Comparing it to the modern day Chinese chopsticks, these ancient chopsticks were extremely similar to the design of modern day chopsticks.Considering those sticks were made thousands of years ago, they demonstrated a high level of tool making skills. Looking at modern day chopsticks, the design remained the same. The majority of Chinese population still uses chopsticks as their main tool in eating.

Chopsticks were seen along side the spread of Chinese culture. As Chinese culture spread along the coast of South East Asia, the culture of sing chopsticks were cultivated into different cultures, including modern day Vietnam, Korea, and Japan.

Variations of chopsticks in Asia

In spite of the fact that chopsticks were imagined in China, there were numerous varieties of chopstick created as it was changed to suit distinctive dietary patterns. Chinese chopsticks
