By "purpose", perhaps such tokens need more than an earn-and-sell default - that isn't really activity. So perhaps the tokens need some activities that are token-related in addition to the social actions that create them.

My theory is that token need a purpose or a niche.
With regard to token properties lower inflation and shorter lock ups would help.
