PayPal Bans More Politically Divergent Customers

in #censorship6 years ago (edited)

PayPal made the news again since banning BitChute and Tommy Robinson from their platform earlier this month. Now they have banned the UK Independence Party and others affiliated with the party. Not only members of UKIP, but donors have reported being banned from PayPal.

It seems PayPal doesn't let people do business on their platform if they don't like what you do. The politically divergent Tomyy Robinson and UKIP demonstrate that PayPal may beheaded towards more bans in the future as it targets other politically dissident organizations.

Susan Smith is one person targeted and removed from PayPal that shares her experience. At first she was asked if she held political office. She told PayPal she didn't. Then they asked her for proof of address without telling her where to provide the proof. PayPal then suspended her account. She said other members have told her the same thing happened to them.

UKIP Leader Gerard Batten PayPal for not being politically neutral, calling their actions "nakedly political" as they obviously are bringing their own politics into the business. Those who support open borders and politically correct speech don't have issues and get to keep using PayPal. But when you are politically divergent, you are at risk of losing your ability to conduct business trough PayPal.

PayPal should not be closing people's account for simply being associate with opposing or undesirable political organizations. They are a business, and closing the doors to customers in this manner is simply wrong. People use PayPal to pay their bills. This isn't just one site among many people can use. It's a dominant player in the online payment market. It would be like major banks closing it's door to people who don't follow the politics the bank owners want them too.

PayPal should be held accountable for not being a politically neutral company that is denying access to people simply based on their political affiliations.

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

Good job shooting yourself in the foot PayPal. This is one BIG reason we need the crypto industry. We need a currency and transaction platform that can't be easily manipulated for political purposes. That's the bottom line, and that need isn't going to go away because we're in a bear market.

Yup, crypto has a lot of potential.

There's a silver lining to this cloud. More and more people may discover crypto if the centralized payment services deny them servive on such grounds.

Yeah, pressure to look elsewhere can bring more ppl to crypto indeed ;)

this is just crazy. One more reason why we need crypto and free open money. Don't they know this is what will only accelerate their fall?

Maybe they don't care, as most people won't care since they aren't affected, and some might even cheer it on.

And the list grows larger of companies who are demanding there to be a new company that will compete with them by creating the group of consumers. I find it telling however that there are not many rich people on the so called right creating these alternative platforms. Makes one question their sincerity as well.

Yeah, they "right" that is bought and paid for as part of the same establishment coin :/

@styxhexenhammer just stopped using paypal for his stuff, in protest..
Others would be wise to do the same thing.

well done him.

I stopped too, since I wasn't even using it :P

You rebel, you!

So PayPal can pick and choose their clients. I suppose certain businesses acclimate more that way, but being such a large business it doesn't look well. Most people including myself would consider that discrimination or censorship. Shame on them. Thanks for sharing @krnel

Yeah, you can refuse customers, but when you do it for political reasons... it seems unamerican...

Wait, what?! PayPal banned tommy Robinson from using their service? What!!! Why!? That’s one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Why is tommy getting so demonised, more than anyone else. Am i the only one who thinks he is just expressing his views like millions of Others do... maybe in a far more extreme and hurtful way than tommy

Yup, it's political tyranny, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Paypal, they are all playing with fire.

Man this shit is getting ridiculous. They aren’t trying to hide their politics at all now. Banning AJ was stupid but there was pressure from other places to do so across many mainstream platforms. This is just pathetic, who are the UKIP? I mean come on that’s just flagrant abuse.

The are viewed as "extremist" I gather: "Eurosceptic and right-wing populist political party"

Paypal are probably going to be one of the biggest casualties due to the adoption of crypto, in fact with stunts like this they are speeding up the process.

Yup, the spiral to null has begun.
