Daily Celestial Challenge: The Tower Brigde (Wednesday-Architecture-Structure)

In the east of the city of London a bridge was built that allowed citizens to cross the river Tamesis, but unlike the other bridges over the river, it became an icon of the city and a place to capture photographs of the millions of tourists passing through London. This bridge is the Tower Brigde, which is very interesting because it combines the qualities of a bascule bridge and a suspension bridge, since on the date of its construction, this should allow the passage to the ships that went to the old port of London that was located in the Pool of London. This bridge was built in neo-Gothic Victorian style during the second part of the 19th century and its name is because it is located very close to the Tower of London.

For the construction of the bridge, the City of London Corporation decided to make a design contest for which it is said that some 50 designs participated, resulting in 1,884 winning the idea of Horace Jones. The construction of the bridge lasted about 8 years.

Between the two towers there is a distance of 60 meters approximately and has a drawbridge of 244 meters in length, which to be able to allow the passage of ships must rise to an angle of 86 °. Its two towers have a height of 65 meters. It is said that the bridge rises 1,000 times a year.

The bridge is a very busy place, to maintain an integrated structure, only a load limit of 18 tons is allowed and only driving at a speed of 32 kilometers per hour is allowed. It is said that the pedestrian crossing was closed in 1910, since at the time of climbing the footbridges, citizens were easy targets for thieves. It is also said that there were many prostitutes. For this reason the citizens preferred to wait until the passage of the vehicles of the bridge reopened to pass.

Currently for the passage of vehicles you must pay a surcharge, while for pedestrians the step is free. Only those who wish to look through the telescopes on the top of the bridge should pay a small amount.
