Many of these were realised through travellers, soldiers and other convoys. It wasn’t until the late 1880s where the first Siamese would be seen on western soils. This would lead to a new batch or selective breeding programmes across the western side. After a few decades, the first American Cat Show would be carried out in the capital.

Since the inception of selective breeding there have been numerous attempts to establish stable and recognised breeds. Various associations have closely monitored and awarded breed status over the years. They have also revoked and revised the status of others where various conditions and ailments were witnessed. With over fifty breeds coming into the cat world, there are still breeds that are not internationally recognised. The selective breeding process also goes beyond aesthetic appeal. The survival of a breed and conscious breeding of stronger and robust specimens can help improve the overall strength and lineage. This has been related to speeding up natural selection within the cat world and many breeders will pay close attention to the specimens that are on hand. The selection of the healthiest cats are often a worthwhile trade-off when trying to establish or maintain a breed.
