Accomplishing my Goal to buy a Lamborghini Diablo 4 Years Later

in #cars7 years ago (edited)

I made a goal at the end of 2013 to buy a Lamborghini Diablo in 2014. It was a huge, scary, exciting, and unbelievable goal. I was not sure I would accomplish that goal, but somehow I did.

I bought my 1999 Lamborghini Diablo in May of 2014. It actually arrived in my neighborhood in a truck on fathers day. We were at my wife's parents house when I got the call the car had arrived. Sorry folks, have to cut fathers day short! I will always remember driving up and seeing the truck with a crowd of people around it from my neighborhood. Here is a pic of my first time driving it. That was also the first time I had seen the car in person, and the first time I had ever driven a V12 Lamborghini.

I had wanted a Lamborghini since I was about 6 when my sister bought me a World's Fastest Car Book. I think I have wanted every car in that book, which was written in about 1985. I still have the book and can see the other cars I drooled over when I was a kid: Aston Martin V8, Countach, Porsche 930, Porsche 928, Ferrari Boxer, and many more. In fact it was the Countach I had always wanted, but for a number of reasons I made the Diablo my goal. For one thing you could buy a nice Diablo for around $100,000 back in 2014, and a Countach would set you back three times that.

I found my Diablo at Cat's Exotics, a dealer in Seattle who specialized in Lambos. I had my eyes on the car for many months and loved it because it was Monterey Blue, a super rare color. I first saw the car in the beginning of 2014, but was not ready to buy it at that time. The car kept taunting me, because I knew it would be almost impossible to find that color again. The price was also decent at $135,000 for a 1999 Alpine Edition. They only made 12 Alpine editions, but they aren't that much more valuable than a regular Diablo. Then in March, I heard the car was going to auction. I knew if I bought it at the auction I would have to pay a buyer's premium and would not get to do a PPI (pre purchase inspection). I also knew there was a chance someone else would buy it. So I started negotiating with Roy Cats and we struck a deal at $125,000. We then found a few things that needed fixed in the PPI and he agreed to fix those if we raised the price to $126,000. You can see a full video of the car below.

I have had the car for 3 and half years now and it has been amazing. The car has needed some repairs like the front shocks ($8,000), and a burned out starter ($5,000). It is a joy to drive and has helped my business and blog tremendously. The car was also one of my greatest goals. By setting that goal it made me incredibly motivated every day. I would drive to work imagining I was driving that car. It was also one of the most exciting times of my life seeing that car for the first time. The cool part about owning the car is it is worth about $225,000 to $250,000 today. My family is first, but the car is a huge part of that family.

Real estate was how I was able to afford the car as well as my Lotus and a few other cars I own. You can see the full write up on the purchase of the car here:

Congrats on buying your dream car, like you said the nice part of owning this is that it is in fact an appreciating item. You can never go wrong with collectibles! :)

Thank you. It ia funny when people ask me why I got a crappy old Lambo instead of a new one. Well, because I didn't want it to lose 100k in value as soon as I drove it, and I like the old ones better. Manual V12, which you can't get with the new ones. Plus they make 10 times as many now as they did in the 80s and 90s

I know exactly what you are saying! For one, I'm an avid fan of 90's motoring, especially Japanese imports. Why own a new R35 GT-R when I can own a much rarer appreciating asset from the 90's! Due to the draconian law(25 year import law) in the states and media making these cars more valuable I've decided to start picking them up, restoring and garaging them. Recently added the Toyota MR2 SW20 to my collection, planning on a 1995-1996 Honda NSX sometime this year, exactly as you stated why buy the new Honda/Acura NSX and lose $$$ when I can have something appreciating in my garage.

Nice. I like the old GTRs for sure, not so much the new ones. I also like the old NSX's better than the new ones as well. I am working on getting a 1981 aston martin v8 volante now.

Bro, this is dope!!! I wanna get a white Gallardo convertible, this year!
