The CCC (Car Connectivity Consortium) consortium has released the first Digital Key that will allow the virtual car key to be downloaded to the smartphone.

The consortium includes renowned automakers as well as smartphone manufacturers, including Apple, Audi, BMW, General Motors, Hyundai, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Samsung, and Volkswagen.

Using the virtual key directly with your smartphone through NFC support, you can unlock and lock your car, start the engine, give the driver access to the car, and so on. This standard places a strong emphasis on safety.

Consortium members have already started working on the second Digital Key standard. Its release is expected in the first quarter of next year. It also provides a standardized authentication protocol between the car and the smart device.
