BMW stopped production of involuntary M550i

in #car6 years ago

The reason is that the modification does not meet the new standards for ecology
The new procedure for testing emissions in Europe will take more than one victim in the ranks of BMW, it is clear from the latest information. After Wednesday showed that in May will end production of current generation M3, since you will not be able to meet new standards for environmental, now understand that modification M550i will also be removed from the conveyor. But while M3-kata will be removed permanently from the production to the emergence of its new generation, the European specification M550i xDrive will be back at the factory after the BMW engineers modify its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine to meet the new standards.

Recall that the new procedure for testing vehicles named Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure and is better known by the abbreviation WLTP. It will replace the current less precise program New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), with effect from September 2018. After that date, customers will receive information on the costs and environmental values of each car, calculated solely on the new standard WLTP.

The main difference is that in NEDC rely solely on laboratory tests, while WLTP cars are tested under realistic conditions, including high speeds, but also for rapid acceleration and aggressive braking. In addition, cars undergo tests with and without optional equipment, which itself provides a clearer picture of what the cost and levels of emissions of each vehicle in real terms and relative to the actual weight.

To adjust engine M550i xDrive to the new requirements, BMW engineers have to obtain a special particulate filter developed for use in gasoline engines. Unfortunately, by BMWBlog reported that the component has not yet been developed. As a consequence, the production of modification will be frozen for at least several months from the end of May. It is believed that 97% of all cars BMW will successfully meet the standards WLTP until June 1, but models like the M550i and the aforementioned M3 will be part of the remaining 3%.

Prospective customers of the new BMW M5 is no reason for concern. The model uses the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine as the M550i, but this specification already meets the requirements of WLTP.
