This weekend one of my tires just worn completely while driving on the freeway, luckily i was already heading for my exit, and i usually drive defensevely so no accident took place, but there was also a good timing, if on a curve or going faster could have been disastrous.
The low income on the job, the car expenses increasing and probably being without a job in a month or so as my current contract will end, made me ask for help here, who knows, i've seen others and have helped also (only with voting power.)
The car
An Ford Escort MK3 '86 1.3 carb, sold to me cheap by a friend. I'm usually picky with cars (that i don't have) but i liked the driving and the engine / suspension are almost new as the previous owner took good care of it. One owner and not 100k kms yet.
It actually got a engine overhaul about a year ago, and then the car was stopped for 8 months or more. I got to see the silicone spreading (meaning fresh overhaul). The bad points of the car were strong rust points (I will have to deal with that later...) and of course the tires.
I have only done minor maintenance, oil, spark plugs, filters, not much more.
The car now needs (at least) a carb overhaul, new tires (usually 2 but this may require all of them), steering alignment and transmission "rubber covers" t
Buying new tires
I knew "Sava" tires were bad, it's pretty common to buy cheap tires in Portugal.. it's a "fake" brand and in this case pretty hard compound, they squeal and drift away pretty easilly, but safely driving in can serve the purpose. (doesnt pay the price difference tough..)
I always like to have medium / higher quality than needed tyres, it's one of those few things in your car that you can put some money in for driving safety and i hadn't had a chance to do in this car.
What happened ?
I was making a road trip with my companion mechanic, in the hot hours and after about 3h the front left tire seem to blew for a second and i see a bit of smoke and some rubber flying off !
It didn't send me off to the side or anything like i was expecting, and no cars were around me so they didn't got hit with the small pieces.
Quickly pulled over, breath for a few seconds. After i see the tire is still with air and actually not blown, i decided to make the last km or two as i was arriving my destination.
Left the car for the night, and decided to switch tires only the day after, tire was now empty. Bit of front bumper missing and the side of the car is seriously bumped, you can imagine the force of the rubber...
So this happened...needless to say that i need my car for work, family support and steem activities ^^ No matter what i will keep steeming either by car, foot or bike. If you can drop me a vote, or direct donation. If not no problem, we just steem away !
