3rd Place Game Analysis - England vs Belgium

in #busy6 years ago

England 0 - 2 Belgium

English

The game for the third place is always the most underrated and less waited for match by media and fans because of what it implies: It´s a match featuring the two worse team among the top 4 teams but, we can assume that any team with the qualities and game level to reach this instance, will play this game as any other, giving everything of themselves and trying to win it.

It´s not the same to say you are 4th place as saying you are the 3rd best team in the world and yet, historically this match has had very low ratings and the general interest is low and, even though it always features top level teams, the drive and heart the players play with is nothing compared to when they played the semi final. It´s understandable, after all they wanted to play 7 games, but they didn´t want to play this specific seventh game.

The best example of this is England who, in the game against Croatia at minute 70 started to lose any hope and will to play and it reflected in their 7th game against Belgium. The English men didn´t try to fight for tha balls, ran as if they started the game tired, playing distracted and unorganized and Eric Dier and his lost opportunity to tie the game are the epithome of lazy playing: His shot above the goallie was so weak that even though it had already beaten the goallkeeper, one of the Belgian players had enough time to run for it and save the score.

Meanwhile, Belgium proved that having a bad day and playing bad, resulting in a loss against France wouldn´t make them lose any drive and will to win every game they played. Belgium, the only team that didn´t played with an extremely defensive strategy throughout the tournament, kept playing with the same style against France and then agasint England. They went out to every game striving to obliterate their rival and this game was no exception... it was the minute 4 and Lukaki started a play that filtered a pass that Thomas Meunier used to beat Jordan Pickford.

Who reminds the Brazil-Nederland 3rd place match when in 2014 WC? Brazil had no desires to win -and even play- after been defeated 7-1 by Germany. However, the humiliation continued after the Dutch team beated them 5-0.
Damn! I can remind like yesterday how perturbing was the thunderous booing provided by the fans in these two last games where Brazil played.
At least, the Belgium-England 3rd place game was nice and more exciting...

      5-0? I just remember a 3-0 there.

      Excuse my mistake...
In any senses there was humiliation...
