People ask me if I am afraid of Artificial Intelligence and I answer with a "no". When they ask why, I tell them my simple reason:

Because we will finally have some intelligence in the room.

Reading the events of the last two days on discord, Telegraph, and now, on here, I can see that emotionalism rules the day. It is no wonder so little can get accomplished.

The results of Hard Fork 20 opened Bitchfest 2018. People were coming from far and wide to throw their highly thought out, two cents in.

There are a few things we need to keep in mind. Hard Fork 20 was a software update. This was a rather large one that, since this is blockchain, needed to reach consensus going back to the first block. That is how it works. This is not something that is started from wherever we left off. To replay the entire blockchain takes hours and that is what the witnesses had to do once the patch was deployed.

There is a couple things all software developers understand.

Rule #1: there will always be bugs
Rule #2: you never know where the bugs will be.

When deploying something like this, there are going to be issues. In fact, I believe that insight was provided before the Hard Fork:

steem.png

https://busy.org/@taskmaster4450/hard-fork-20-day-everyone-needs-to-chill-and-steemhunt-rolling-along

Notice what it says in bold:

There will be things that go wrong with the hard fork, so prepare yourself for it

Of course, once Bitchfest opened up, there was no stopping it. The problem with this nonsense is that there is nothing productive that comes from it. I have little patience for those who just want to complain, especially with little knowledge.

I read one dimwit on Telegram who posted this is the end of STEEM. Does this person even have enough sense to get out of the rain? Because it is obvious what is going on.

Here is a question for everyone: do you prefer how things were? Did you like the sign up system and the fact that it took a week or more to get approval? Do you think that was a recipe for long term success on STEEM?

Do you realize what the Hard Fork did?

One of the main changes was to allow a different way to onboard users. The goal is not to have 1M or 2M accounts on STEEM but tens of millions. The development team is looking at making sure this blockchain is able to handle hundreds of millions of users.

And yet you want to complain about your voting power being zapped for 5 days while the new update seeks out equilibrium?

The potential for 100M users or full VP for 5 days? Tough choice.

Of course, we all know this is the fault of the Steemit development team. They are all a bunch of know-nothing morons.

I found this idea, which was on discord, absolutely laughable. Obviously, this person has no clue that Steemit has zero authority to do a Hard Fork like this. That is a central tenet of DPOS. The only ones who can implement a change like this is the Witnesses. It is their responsibility to decide whether they run the upgrade or not. They can negate it simply by not running the software.

Naturally, this did not happen.

So where do the witnesses come from? WE VOTE FOR THEM.

In the dropdown menu on the right side of Steemit there is a tab that says "Vote for Witnesses". Anyone want to guess what that is used for? If you said to vote for witnesses, congratulations, you get to clean the bathrooms tonight as a prize.

I took a quick look on steemd at the accounts of some of the more outlandish comments. Does it surprise anyone that they voted for few to no witnesses? Probably not.

There were many who are screaming that the Hard Fork should have been delayed. Yet there are few arguments that make any sense. The truth of the matter is the witnesses had 30 days to tie into the testnet and see what would happen. As @lukestokes candidly stated, most of the witnesses did not put forth as much effort as they could have.

(For those with witness votes left, one for @lukesstokes.mhth is a good idea. https://steemd.com/@lukestokes.mhth)

If they didn't do it in 30 days, what makes anyone think they would have done it over the next two weeks? Or month? Or two months? The answer is they most likely would not.

There is one argument that I read which did make sense by @intelliguy. It was pointed out that going forward with an update after the community was slugged in the face a week ago (my terminology) by the blockhcain going down was not smart.

In technology, when you disrupt your userbase... you don't follow through with your next upgrade immediately. People are still recovering from the last outage.

You have to bring some homeostasis to the platform.

https://steemit.com/steemit/@intelliguy/the-hf20-problems-were-anticipated-by-intelliguy-no-one-listened-open-letter-to-steemit

This is a very candid view of things and an outlook I can buy. Giving the userbase time to get their feet planted might have helped. However, as I just mentioned, there is nothing to say that the witnesses would have aggressively tested the network even if there was a delay.

Either way, in spite of the troubles. this update is a great thing for STEEM. Yes, we have to wait a few days for our VP to power up which really sucks. And, when that happens, there is nothing that says other issues might not arise. Remember, we have no idea where bugs will come from.

That said, this is a much better system than what we were dealing with before. The sign up process was holding STEEM and, more importantly, the applications back. This will allows a big release once the RC details are worked out. The potential of the "floodgates opening" is very good.

Some are saying people will leave because of this. My view is "let them". STEEM is for people who have the foresight to see what is taking place. There is a great opportunity here for those willing to weather the storm.

As they say, "if it was easy, everyone would be doing it".

If you found this article informative, please give it an upvote and resteem.

Took me six to be exact lol

Rule #1: there will always be bugs
Rule #2: you never know where the bugs will be.

Do you program? Cause you nailed that on the head!

And yet you want to complain about your voting power being zapped for 5 days while the new update seeks out equilibrium?

That is all I'm hearing about. It's getting old everyone needs to read up on RCs or just keep their mouth shut for a week. If I was a betting man I'd bet all my STEEM that no one even thinks about RCs or their "Mana" in a week. Especially if they are using our platform legitimately.

Of course, we all know this is the fault of the Steemit development team. They are all a bunch of know-nothing morons. I found this idea, which was on discord, absolutely laughable.

I have seen it all over steem chat as well. When there are tens of thousands of lines of code changed in a system no group of mankind will be able to iron out all the issues before going live. It's in the live where these obscure bugs arise, not in testing.

I challenge everyone talking smack on the STEEM dev team to read this and tell me the understand it on the first read. Again, if I was a betting man I'd bet all my STEEM that they wouldn't.

most of the witnesses did not put forth as much effort as they could have

As a witness that can't even afford the server I run it is hard to run on testnet and forgo even the small SP given on the live chain. That being said maybe I should have and looking back it could have helped. Please take this as my formal apology for my lack of contribution to the test network.

Well said. Although I am not a programmer, I learned programming in my first year of university (engineering) and I totally agree with what you said. Even for simple programs that we made back then, it was almost impossible to know what the bugs would be before running the code. That's just how programming works. You can try your best to catch them before going live, but inevitably there will be more that appear that you only realize after the fact.

Thank you for the extended comment @jrswab

Do you program? Cause you nailed that on the head!

No far from it. I am more of a sales and marketing guy. But I have talked to enough developers to know this is what happens.

The only true way to find bugs is to run the software live. Nobody likes to hear that but it is a programmer's reality.

I agree 100% the best we programmers/devs/hackers can do is to get it as close to ready as possible and let it out into the wild.

I am more of a sales and marketing guy.

We need your help in Nebulus 😅

I wholeheartedly agree. I can understand to some degree why would people would be annoyed, but with the addition of discounted accounts, how can they really complain? My biggest complaint with the Steem blockchain was the cost of account creation, and we might just have solved it.

Some are saying people will leave because of this. My view is "let them". STEEM is for people who have the foresight to see what is taking place. There is a great opportunity here for those willing to weather the storm.

I totally agree with this statement and waiting for the Steem Power to recharge is not a big deal in the end. Now we have the foundation for communities and SMT.

By the way, great article and Steem on! :)

The potential for 100M users or full VP for 5 days? Tough choice.

This!

I'll take the 5 days of minimal votes and voting for that...All day everyday!

(Speaking of which....Apologies for the small upvote man...lol )

In around next week everyone is going to say hf20 was the best thing ever.

Hey, @taskmaster4450.

I think it's fair to say that most of us here don't have much knowledge at all about how blockchains work or what it takes to maintain them. I know I have only the smallest of inklings, and that's not because I have any great coding background but from the brief interactions in the comment sections of the steemitblog update posts.

That said, in fairness, up until their last post before the hard fork there wasn't as much "things could get screwy" kind of language, but rather information dumps. Any updates outlining what's proposed, what it will do, etc., is great. Maybe they could have included more of the language in the Monday afternoon post in previous ones.

Regardless, there's still going to be those who whine. I know I've not been happy about it myself. This was my first hard fork along with tens of thousands of others, and being told last minute to expect the unexpected, when we don't really have a working knowledge of things ourselves, and do depend on Steemit or others to give guidance, I guess we get what we get when it comes to aftermath posts and commentary elsewhere.

Everyone is free to express their opinion, which includes their ignorance, and to get their frustrations out. Once that's over, we can get back to the day to day heavy lifting. We're only human, and emotions are going to be a part of it, warranted or not, shortsighted or long term view.

“No pain, no gain!”. Interesting to see people stop engaging as they see that the voting lower are kow and provide no incentive but we should all be engaging to discuss these issues as it is the only way to improve it. As things settle down, more people will likely praise the HF for the positives! I see some SBD coming back into my account and I am seeing less spam like comments on posts. Need to focus on that as we move forward!

Ahhm..what a lovely exolanatory stuff in mid of chaos of hf20 and. RC and mana mania.....agree that the development is indeed required to acvomodate millions if user good for steemit as well....but the time when weku is allready getting popularity is serious concern. I saw many user hace shifted to weku platform during the two steem blackout and now with another 4-5 days left out to recover completelly...i can imagine..more people shifting to weku...that make steem insecure i guess..

We are all addicted to steem, even people who bitching and complaining.
They could easily step back for a week and wait but they just can't.
They like steem even if they don't know that.
