The disappearance - Part three

in #busy5 years ago

“Of course, it’s me, what do you mean? What’s going on?” Jessy sounded panicky.

“Jessy you’ve been missing for five years…in fact, yesterday was exactly five years.”

“What do you mean I was missing, why is everyone acting so crazy? Last night I was driving home from work, I was in an accident. The car slid off the road and I hit my head.”

“No…no Jessy, it’s been five years and I promise you I’ve never stopped looking for you.” James tried to be as calm as possible. It was very clear to him that she did not believe him.

Jessy stared at him as if he was crazy, and then she burst out laughing. She was either going insane, or she hit her head so hard she must have some sort of a concussion. James was adamant.

“I’m telling you the truth baby. I’ve been through hell and back, and I can’t believe you are right here in front of me.  Jessy felt as if she was in some kind of nightmare.

What happened to her? Why was everyone acting so strangely and what the hell was James talking about?  How on earth could she have been missing for five years?

It was all too much for Jessy to process and she lay back and closed her eyes, hoping that if she opened it again all would be back to normal. Everything was just too farfetched and too much to handle. Jessy burst out crying hysterically.

The nurse called the doctor to give her an injection to calm down and asked James to wait outside. Jessy was out cold within seconds.  James sat outside her room while he waited.

He was still in shock about the fact that she was back. He would never forget that awful night for as long as can remember.  It was their anniversary and he had gone home early to cook dinner. He had a whole romantic evening planned when Jessy phoned to tell him that she would be late.

He was so worried because it started snowing and she were not used to driving at night. She phoned him when she left work and then she never made it home. It was like she just vanished off the face of earth.  He drove around for hours but he had no luck. He reported her missing as soon as he could, and a search party was sent out to look for her. They couldn’t even find her car.

He never stopped looking for her although everybody else suspected that she just picked up and left, but he knew in his heart Jessy would never do such a thing.  In the beginning it was hard, he was always looking for her and he struggled to cope. The investigation did not yield anything. It turned into a cold case.

Slowly but surely, he started to live again, and he even tried dating at one point, but he compared everyone to Jessy and none of the relationships worked out. Five years is a long time. He finally just gave up on everything and poured himself into his work.

When Julia phoned him this afternoon, he thought that she was joking with him. He rushed over to the hospital as quickly as he could, and there she was. Alive and well, looking exactly like the day she went missing. Thinking back she even had on the same clothes as the day she went missing.

He wasn’t planning on going anywhere and while Jessy slept, he went to grab a cup of coffee at the cafeteria. He gave the nurse his number and asked her to phone him immediately if Jessy woke up.  James took a seat at one of the tables while drinking his coffee, when someone tapped him on the shoulder.

“Would you mind if I joined you?” It was the Police-officer that brought in Jessy.

“I’m detective Hatfield. Would you mind if we talked a bit?”

“No, please sit down.”

“How is your wife doing sir?”

“She is still very confused, I still have no clue what happened to her.”

“Sir, we found her next to the road. She was extremely confused and literally collapsed in my arms. I followed up on the 911 call and she claims that she was in an accident, but we searched the whole area and there is still no sign of any vehicle, and believe me we did a very thorough search.  It's literally as if she was dropped off next to the road.

“My wife had been missing for five years, detective.”  James told him the whole story and the detective made notes while they talked.

Detective Hatfield was very interested in this case. Something very strange was going on and he was not going to rest until he gets behind the whole truth.
