The Shawshank Redemption - A Classic — See It Again and Again

In the popular — and highly recommended (even if you have seen it over 100 times) — film The Shawshank Redemption, from way back in 1995, deals with issues such as being returned to society after extensive periods of incarceration. The film stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, and is about a 1946 double murder for which a banker, played by Tim Robbins, was wrongfully convicted. The movie is advertised with the slogan: “Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free”; yet the film itself uncovers deeper insight into this space between hope and fear. The film addresses many deep issues and is a worthy subject of analysis. It is truly a story of redemption.

For those of you who have seen the film already, consider contrasting the Death of Brooks Hatlen and the amazing story of Otis Johnson who was released from prison after 44 years and found hope under similar circumstances. Remember the words of Andy: “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”
