Cambridge Analytica bought data from a Cambridge University researcher named Aleksandr Kogan. He collected data through a self-written application and connected to Facebook from 2013.

In 2014, Facebook changed its policy of not letting the app developer access the user's friend data unless approved by the person.

In 2015, The Guardian reported that Kogan had violated Facebook's policy when sharing data with Cambridge Analytica.

Since then, Facebook has banned Kogan from accessing the platform, and has requested that Cambridge Analytica formally commit that the infringing data has been removed.

Three years later, Facebook was shocked to learn that Cambridge Analytica did not delete the data block despite the commitment. Immediately, Facebook forbade Cambridge Analytica from using any of its services.

The British authorities then investigated Cambridge Analytica. At the same time, the Federal Trade Commission also investigated Facebook's privacy policy.
