Pig-Headed Discipline!

If there's one book on business that I pick up time and time again, it's "The Ultimate Sales Machine" by Chet Holmes.

Don't be put off by the title. It goes way beyond sales (as important as sales are to a business!). This is a tour de force on how to build and scale a successful and thriving business. The only downside for most readers of this book, is that Chet sets out just how darned hard it is to build a successful business. It's hard work.

One of the recurring themes in the book for success is the requirement for:

Pig-headed discipline

So many times, Chet runs through case-studies of what he has done to turn around otherwise failing businesses and this theme keeps returning: pig-headed discipline.

Most of the recommendations in the book are not sexy or innovative or new. They are repetitive and boring actions in most cases that, you might be disappointed to learn, get great results! Stuff like defining your target list. Refining your list to establish your "dream clients" (those clients that would be game-changers if you managed to bag them as clients). And then:

Calling them. Then mailing them. Then calling them. Then mailing them. Then calling them. Then mailing them. Then calling them. Then mailing them. Then calling them. Then mailing them. Then calling them. Then mailing them....

This repetitive, sequenced approach (that includes gifts etc in the mail) is repeated and repeated over weeks and months with.......pig-headed discipline!

And this is often what business is largely about: setting up habits that win. It's not all gung-ho sexy stuff. The majority of factors that separate the successful from unsuccessful businesses is consistent productive daily habits that pay off over time.
