Get A Big Personality – It’s a Brand that Sells!
Are you a shy and retiring wallflower? Then you may not find this post is for you, as it’s about building a personal brand that’s larger than life and attracts people to you. But the good news is that you don’t necessarily have to be larger-than-life to enjoy the perks that having a memorable, distinctive, and personable personality can bring (especially in a sea of gray, virtually identikit marketers out there).
If you think about any industry and the people within it, chances are you think of its personalities first. Richard Branson, CEO of Virgin is a guy who is never far from the headlines, and one of the most successful entrepreneurs of his generation. Donald Trump is another personality – love him or hate him, Trump’s personal brand is a masterclass for any student of building a personal brand. Even in the world of sport where athletic prowess is regarded highly, it’s the big personal brands that come out on top – think Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, and many other sporting personalities who have built a business not just on their incredible talent, but on who they are.
The one thing that all these people have in common is that they are memorable. They explode onto the stage and, whatever they do, people talk about it. There really is no such thing as bad publicity, and these guys are living proof of it.
In marketing, 97% of people fail, as faceless as they were on the day they started. If you want to get ahead, the you need to showcase your brand and electrify potential leads. Keep them entertained, be dynamic – be unpredictable; all of these things can put you ahead of hundreds and thousands of marketers.
You don’t need to be a big personality to succeed – but it helps. Just try to do something every day that’s uniquely you, and never let that personal brand slip.
