Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

When we first moved to Texas we kept getting asked if we'd been to a Buc-ees yet.

A what?
"Oh man! You haven't been to Buc-ees???" They'd ask incredulously.

What's a Buc-ees?
"You know, the big gas stations, they have world's cleanest restrooms...the restrooms are amazing, and more junk food than you can imagine!"

Obviously you weren't really a Texan until you went there. So we found out real fast how loved they are, it's a cult-like following! When I did some research I could see why, so I decided to share it.

Small town boy makes it big

It all started in 1982 when Beaver(Arch) Aplin(at the age of 23) bought an empty lot at the junction of two highways down at Lake Jackson which is an hour South of Houston, Texas.

One of his dad's friends used to call him Bucky Beaver and the nickname Beaver stuck with him so he had a cartoon beaver designed as his store's mascot.

Here he is in front of his first store in 1982 but the mascot sign hadn't gotten there yet:

He didn't do anything spectacular in that first store, just ran a top quality operation with everything well maintained and cleaned, especially the restrooms. He had experience growing up working in his grandparent's convenience store so he knew what he wanted and how he wanted it ran.

In just 3 years he opened up another store, this one larger than his original 3,000 sq ft store. In fact, this second one was 6,000 sq ft and had it's own kitchen. By then he had partnered with Don Wasek who as an expert on supply chains and retail operations.

The building of an empire

In the first 20 years they opened 20 stores but they borrowed from banks instead of going public to outside investors. This way they kept total control of the company which they maintain as a 50/50 split ownership today.

I love the way they're doing this, maintaining complete control and in the families.

The stores kept getting bigger and bigger. Ya know how they say "Everything is bigger in Texas?" Well, eventually the stores were huge. Like over 50,000 sq ft huge! The newer ones built in the last few years have nearly a hundred gas pumps and located on 12 to 14 acres.

The restrooms are a top priority

And they really do have the cleanest restrooms you can find. They have cleaning crews assigned to work on the restrooms 24 hours a day to make sure they're spotless. And those are huge too. The newer stores have 71 urinals, here's Beaver in one:

The stalls don't have thin panels between them, they have walls between them and lit signs that tell you if they're occupied or not. Check out the stalls:

Ever seen convenient store or gas station stalls like that? I didn't think so.

Here's more restroom shots:

Ha! Notice the writing under the restroom signs says "World Famous?" It's true. They've won many awards for the best restrooms. They've also won awards for their food. In 2016 Bon Appétit named Buc-ee’s “America’s Best Rest Stop” in honor of its food.

They have that great Texas brisket:

And more fudge than anyone should be allowed to have:

And all kinds of sandwiches and other things:

Of course, the candy selection is totally insane too:

Probably the world's biggest selection of jerky:

Lots of clothes and stuffed animals. Of course the kids collect Bucky toys and stuffed animals.

Look at these pumps:

These places are outrageous in a crazy, big, good way. They've been called The Disneyland of Convenient Stores. Their latest store has 68,000 sq ft! And has been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as having the world’s longest car wash. lol.

Can they make it outside of Texas?

In 2015 they grossed 960 million dollars! They'll probably gross a billion this year. They have two stores in Florida and Alabama opening to see if they'll have the same appeal there as they do in Texas. They'll change the food to be regional favorites of course.

Why are these guys so successful?

The number one reason is the restrooms. Beaver figured out right from the start that travelers will stop if they know they'll have very clean, safe, restrooms. With no wait lines.

The second biggest draw is the large number of pumps because there are no waiting lines at the pumps either. In smaller gas stations people fill up and run in to use the restroom and cars have to wait in line at the pump. A bottle neck is created.

Of course the rest of the success is due to the insane selections of foods, drinks, merchandise and quality. All of which lend to the cultish following. People buy Buc-ees t-shirts just to say they've been to one! lol. Oh, no discounts either. You pay for the quality.

I love small businesses and entrepreneurs and Beaver Aplin is the ultimate entrepreneur. I hope Buc-ees makes it in Florida and Alabama because if they do, then the whole country is going to see them sooner or later!

You are so right. When you are driving and need to stop you will stop where there are no queues. Clean bathrooms is at the top of the list for women. Guys don't really care to be honest. I had no idea this type of place even existed. I wouldn't have thought you had enough people in Texas to make this place viable as a business. They are obviously doing something right and it's good to see. I hate corporate chains and this is a chain as such, but still privately owned. If it its Florida it will hit other cities soon and will eliminate any other competition. You can't compete against that.

I agree sir cryptoandcoffee! I think they're about to go nationwide. They will need good people to make that happen. I think you should apply for a job and be in on building one of the most successful businesses anywhere!

As far as Texas being able to support these places, yeah Texas has 30 million people now and the freeways within a hundred miles of Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio are jammed. big sections of the state are overcrowded now with the economic boom that has been going on here for the last 20 years.

That is pretty incredible! My father-in law should have lived to see that! He owned 13 truckstops and in his younger days would travel around the country to see what Innovative things other truck stops were doing. He would have been in awe of those places in Texas!

oh wow, yes he would have wouldn't he? The Buc-ees are just crazy. lol. Pretty soon they'll spread to every state on the mainland I think. well, it depends on if they make it in FL and AL but I think they will. They have to get the local food favorites right. I don't know what they would be do you?
BBQ'd crocodile in FL? lol.

In Wisconsin it would be bratwurst. Florida? Maybe a grilled Cuban sandwich or seafood?
The claim to fame at our truckstop was the huge private showers. The truckers loved them and bought fuel from us because of the great showers.

oh I'm sure that's so true about the showers yes, good for you guys! That grilled cuban sandwich, I don't know what that is but I'm sure they'll find out the most popular regional favorites. They also want to put 6 of them in around Atlanta, GA. I think I know the main dessert there, peach cobbler!

Cuban sandwiches are basically ham or pork and Swiss cheese, with mustard and pickles and really great bread

oh that sounds good but then anything grilled is usually pretty good! lol.

Pretty sure that sandwich started out in Florida, but now you can get one at many restaurants, even around here!

howdy today Melinda! oh really? Ain't that something how that happens, it spreads all across the country. How's it going for you today?

And cheese!

Wisconsin/cheese almost goes without saying, doesn't it?🧀❤️

I added fish, venicen and beer. Think of anything else Wisconsinites can't live without? Lol

I think you have it covered! 😃

God bless Texas! Man, I gotta get down there one day and take a break on one of those thrones! Watching my favorite texas tv show right now. Kind of the hill.

hahas! you guys watch King of the Hill over there? lol. That's too funny. Yes well pretty soon I think they'll be where ever you visit in the United States, even Wisconsin! Was it Wisconsin where you're from? lol. I may have gotten the wrong state.

So long story, but there's a couple here and the wife is from El Paso and her husband is a German in the German army. They are moving back to El Paso for 3 years. Anyways, I showed them this post and they had no idea about this amazing place. So now they have something to look forward to when they get back. Yup, your right Wisconsin! Think badger! And yes I love king of the hill!

howdy sir badger! If he is in the German army how can they move here for 3 years? That's an interesting situation. The nearest Buc-ees is in San Antonio so they'll have to check one out over there.
Thanks for commenting sir badger!

Well i have to admit here sir janton you have come up with something that has out done Thailand "Disneyland of Convenient Stores " incredible , amazing out of this world what a achievement and what a story well done buddy :)

howdy sir hangin! thank you, I thought it was fascinating. Do you think something like that would work over there? Or maybe in Australia?

More likely would work over here in Thailand because more population of people as for Australia it has not got enough people for that to work over there is my opinion :)

Howdy today sir hangin! I figured that Thailand might not have the space though but they could always to smaller versions.

How you doing sir janton actually they do have the space but everyone has different ideas i suppose :)

oh I understand sir hangin. Not everyone can be as smart as a Texan. lol.

Ahhhhh.... come on settle down redneck you aren't seen nothing over here yet we have strippers dancing in our toilets and gas station over here :)))))))

what??? no way! you're surely joking right? lol.

I have never even heard of a Buc-ees being from Utah, but now. Now I must go to one! It looks awesome and this is the kind of entrepreneurs Salt Lake City needs more of. I love seeing people make something awesome.

Howdy sir bricbric! I agree, these things are astounding and Utah needs them! lol. I bet it won't be long before they're being courted by other states to set up in their's.

Fingers Crossed lol

That's pretty impressive, all right. I kind of want jerky now...

haha! howdy goat-girlz! just wait a few years and they'll be up your way!

Amazing story of passion and dedication. I too like the fact, that the business was more or less kept in the family and decisions can be made according to someones standards instead of investors expectations.

By the way, clean restrooms along the highways are big business here in Germany too... not quite that big though ;-)

Howdy back sir reinhard-schmid! Yes sir, I love the fact that they didn't sell out to the major corporations who put profit above all else for their share prices.
Oh, that's good to hear about Germany and clean restrooms, perhaps some day Buc-ees will be there too! lol.

What a great washroom! Even they are bigger in Texas. 😊 Place is fantastic.
Have you gone there often, Cowboy?

No but they just build a new one just twenty minutes from here, so we'll be in there frequently if for no other reason than to get brisket and fudge! I have no idea about the quality of the gas but I assume that it's pretty good knowing those guys and their insistence on quality.

wow.. it's a huge place. (we build an entire town.)
And the selling point seems to be the - toilet? Oh, and the food and the shop and the ...
Well, he has got the right formula for success. Good on him.

Howdy sir Vincent! yes, the biggest problem is getting customers into your place of business. He has that problem solved so now the rest is just marketing and inticing with his captive audience. Do you guys have anything like that along your highways?

Howdy Jonboy. No, nothing like the Buc-ees here. We can't afford to spare the land/space.
