On Stranger Tides, Tim Powers. Signed First Edition.
Tim Powers, born in 1952 is an American writer, working primarily in science fiction and fantasy. Most of his fiction is what can be called 'secret histories', in that he uses establish historical facts featuring famous people, yet shows another side of them in which occult and supernatural factors influence their motivations and behaviors. He's an accomplished and acclaimed writer, winning the World Fantasy Award not once, but twice!
On Stranger Tides was published in 1987, and was nominated for the World Fantasy Award and placed second the annual Locus poll for best fantasy novel. The novel takes place during the Golden Age of Piracy, and features real historical figures alongside fiction characters, following the protagonist's quest to claim his inheritance and rescue a woman. In 2007 Disney optioned the book, and it eventually became the basis for the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, released in 2011. This is the first edition, signed by Powers on the title page (upside down as is his trademark signature style):
