Nausea, Jean-Paul Sartre. First Edition Thus.

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) was a French philosopher, playwright, novelist, activist, and one of the key figures of Existentialism. His first novel, Nausea, published in 1938, is one of the canonical works of existentialism. The novel concerns a dispirited historian who becomes convinced that inanimate objects and situations encroach on his ability to define himself, on his intellectual and spiritual freedom, and thus give him a sense of nausea. It's a great read, albeit a bit disturbing. This is an early edition from 1949, published by New Directions and featuring an iconic dust jacket by Alvin Lustig:
