Sri Lanka Bombings: Maintaining Hope in a Harsh and Violent World

Perhaps it has always held true for humanity that our history is a checkerboard of extraordinary violence and great acts of humanitarianism.

I don't propose to know what motivates people to commit the atrocities they commit, allegedly in the name of something they believe in. But also as a counterstrike against something they do not believe in.

My heart and prayers go out to those who lost their lives in Sri Lanka; to their families whose most likely peaceful day was interrupted — permanently — by today's events.

It can be very challenging to maintain a sense of hope and positive feelings in our harsh and violent world.

Indeed, many slide into a state of despair and depression: "What GOOD does anything do?" echoes through our heads, as our moments of peace are shattered by something horrific and brutal.

Inherent in this seems to be a complete disregard for the sanctity of life.

Challenging as it may be, I encourage you to try to stay positive and hopeful in the face of tragic setbacks and shocking events. In spite of it all, there are many beautiful things in the world, and with hope we can still move towards something better for all of us.
