Neighbors are people who live around our house, that is, next, in front, and behind our house.

If we live in a park or in a same village, they will be known as neighbors. Neighbors are very important because they are the ones who will be our friends and the people who will help us when we face the hardships. The Malay proverb says that "Jiran sepakat membawa berkat". So, we need to strengthen the spirit of the neighborhood so that we will always be united in doing something. Hence, appropriate measures should be taken to foster the spirit of neighborhood among the locals.

The primary step to take is to have gotong-royong activities. Through gotong-royong activities, neighbors can gather and collaborate while discussing activities to be done. When gathering and discussing, they will be able to get acquainted with each other, thus allowing someone to know their neighbors more closely. This can be illustrated by the Malay proverb that says "Tak kenal maka tak cinta". For example, activities that can be held in collaboration are clearing garden areas, preparing meals for feasts, and so on. In this way, we can build and enhance our neighbors.

In addition, we also have to hold open house functions during a celebration. This practice can form friendships and reinforce the spirit of neighborhood among local neighbors. Through an open house event, neighbors can tell and tell stories about the experience more closely. Next, through this open house, all members in the community have the opportunity to gather and discuss while enjoying the food provided by the host. For example, during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Christmas, Deepavali, and so forth open house councils should be an annual event. Strictly speaking, the open house council was able to bring community members to meet and get acquainted more closely.

We celebrate the feast day together.

In addition, we also have to organize Family Day activities to foster the spirit of neighborhood among local communities. During this event, all members of the neighboring family will participate in activities such as kayaking, putting water into bottles, elephant cavages, and so on. When Family Day activities are held, warmth will be established not only between mother and father, but also children. Such activities should be held on soccer grounds, volleyball courts, recreational parks or nearby schools. So, through this activity, a close relationship with neighbors can be formed which will indirectly cause feelings of wanting to help each other as revealed in the Malay proverbs to the same hill climbing, to the same village descended.

Not only that, we should also encourage people to engage in social activities such as associations or organizations. Locals must form an association with an organized organizational system. The association or establishment shall include all residents as members. Today, many voluntary organizations are set up in communities such as the Rukun Tetangga Organization, Village Security and Development Committee, the Death Hall Organization, and so on. For example, through the Rukun Tetangga Organization, local communities take turns monitoring the safety of the park to avoid undesirable events. This can be seen in the Malay proverb, which is ‘like aur with a cliff’ that emphasizes the spirit of backing-up or helping each other in life.

•They will organize some activities for the community.

In conclusion, we need to foster the spirit of neighborhood among the locals. In this era of globalization, selfishness and disregard for others are increasingly thickened as contained in the Malay proverb "bagai enau dalam belukar melepaskan pucuk masing-masing ". If this is left, the spirit of the neighborhood will fade and consequently will affect national unity. There is a saying that "bersatu kita teguh, bercerai kita roboh ". Therefore, by enhancing the spirit of the neighborhood, unity will grow stronger and stronger. So, in all times, we must always strive to ensure the spirit of the neighborhood is always preserved so that our country is always safe, harmonious and prosperous.

A good neighbour is a welcome blessing..

Love,
