Mobile devices more and more under attack

Hackers are getting more and more inventive when it comes to social engineering. Last week I recevied (and with me more people) a SMS which stated that my digipass (a card from the bank to be able to do electronic banking) was revoked. I could reactive it by clinking on the link in the textmessage. Although I know that my bank never would send a SMS for this kind of things and certainly would not ask to click on a link for this kind of (sensitive) information I immediately saw that the link used couldn't be a link of the bank. It does made me wonder if there are any people whom did use the link to try (and thus believe) to reactivate their card. I tried to call the mobile number which sended the text message but of course (me being naive) no one answered, it probably is a burner phone (sim card).

Although it's not quiet new SMS scams are becomming more and more popular. The reason is because a lot of people already know the scams through Email or fake websites but aren't suspicious (not yet) when they receive a SMS from someone. Therefore the risk that they would click on the link in the text message (and thus success for the hacker/scammer) is quiet big.

How can you avoid being scammed?

  • Never click on a link if you don't know it's origin or the sender
  • Never give your (private) information like passwords, financial information or login codes
  • If you doubt the message, try to contact the sender.

What to do when you did click on a link?

  • If you gave a password, change it immediately
  • If you gave payment information like a creditcard number, block the card or account.
  • If you gave a email adress, then you will probably receive more spam. Don't unsubscribe to the spammail because they will notice that your mail is active and you will receive more spam.

hackers get more creative while 'we' are more mobile and online. It seems they are often a step ahead compared to the 'cures' against their actions. So it's better to be safe then sorry. It's a business.... And they make a lot of money out of it..

Stay safe !!!!

Cheers,

Peter

I had the same text yesterday. And because I am no customer at the SNS I instantly clicked on the link to see what I was getting....oh no wait I did nothing.
I have had some real messages like this from my bank but that was always without a link just informing about a new card that will come, never with a link in it.

Exactly a bank wouldn't send a link with a message and certainly not to give your personal information.

Lol, I got a similar text but mine was real, it was from the bank and had no link. It said a new card will be issued and I'm going to be notified.

You have to be very careful who you trust as many people don't have a clue what to do in a case like this.

Exactly, it can cause a lot of trouble and damage.

I actually just started talks with a company that does a fake phishing attack on your business and gives you the stats of how many people actually clicked. Then you can use that info to target the users you need to give more training. They also give you videos and guides you can use to help make the training easier. It is really important to let people know what is out there and what to keep an eye out for.

That's awesome. Awareness is the key to solve a lot of risks. The main risk lies within the employees themselves, they are the biggest risk for a company. Those phishing campaigns works great, although people often all say they aren't clicking on links... The outcome of such a campaign proofs the opposite :)
