Palmtop publishing: a comprehensive guide

what do you need?

Nowadays you do not even need a pc or even a laptop to publish online, a "simple" smartphone will do! I focus on Android phones because they are cheap and tweakable. I never owned an Apple product and do not plan to do so, but most tips should work on iOS as well.

- phone

You do not need a flagship phone, but decent specs are mandatory: it saves you headaches and frustration!
Minimal specifications for stress free content creation:

  • 2 GB RAM, so you can edit photos and have multiple tabs open in your browser
  • 16GB memory: minimal storage for modern Android: anything smaller will cause you to have frequently delete apps and files to be able to update.

Anything else will help, but is not mandatory: a bigger battery means you can work longer away from power sources; a big screen for readability or smaller for convenient carrying? Also, it helps to get a phone that will receive updates, especially if you want to use it for financial things
I use a first generation Wiley Fox Swift, which runs on Android 7 and gets frequent updates. Had it for a year and it is the best phone I owned.

-apps

Which apps do you need? I can only talk about apps I use myself:

writing

For writing, I use WriterPlus. I love the clean interface, the ease of use and the fact it lets you preview markdown, so you know what your text is going to look like on Steemit!

I use the basic camera app and editor. I tried other apps, but they are more trouble than they are worth imho.

file sharing

Pushbullet enables you to sent links, files, texts from a chrome account to phone and vice versa. This is what I use. I tried Pocket and never use it anymore. Pushbullet is easy and quick.

- outlets

So when you created your content, where will you post it? The options are many. My personal picks:

steemit (duh)

Steemit is a good place to publish: it is still growing and there are a lot of interesting and inspiring people about.

giffgaff forums (UK only)

Technically, it is a forum for a phone provider: giffgaff. The slogan of this company is "run by you": they do not have a helpdesk and depend on the community to provide help! Because of this you can earn money (" payback"), payable as phone credit or PayPal,on the forum, even for non helpdesk topics!
I mainly use WiFi and rarely call or text and therefore this "Pay As You Go" network is perfect for me and since I joined I have earned more money than I spent on phone credit!
giffgaff if you want to sign up and get £5 free credit when you top up £10😉

Minds

Minds.com is a fairly new platform, that sells itself by being "pro free speech". Looks like Facebook, and gives you minds tokens, which are on the Ethereum Blockchain. They might switch to SMT and become part of the STEEM ecosystem 🤔. You can mainly use the tokens to "boost" your posts, which works better than steemits "promoted posts". Main problems aret hat there is a level of censorship, because it is not as open as steemit and the worst: unlike Steemit, it is not an open economy and the prices asked for exposure are too high for me personally.

medium

Long used, lot of hipsters and Nassim Taleb 😎 Good clean interface. No financial incentives to post or respond. Lots of hipster opinions, some good stuff.

LinkedIn

I published one article here, not much reads, zero interaction and I hate the interface, layout and company, but hey, technically a possiblity 😅

gadgets

lenses

I use cheap clip-on lenses, for the occasional macro and fisheye shot. Most people will look at your blog on a small screen, so do not obsess over a 42 Megapixel camera. I do take real photos, but for most publishing it is not needed.

keyboards

Typing on a phone can be fairly exasperating, especially for longer texts. I like a good keyboard, I can deal with a small screen. I am testing if a phone plus keyboard can replace my netbook (my phone is faster than my laptop by now😂)

any tips you would like to add?

Sort:

Especially if you want to use it for financial things it's a best option

I have been looking for a wireless keyboard to use with my phone any suggestions?

I use a "Microsoft Universal Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard"( in the photo at the top)
Pretty comfortable and light and lasts a long time on a single charge 😀

Awesome! I will be looking into this one for sure thank you so much for getting back with me so quickly!!!!
