Thinking About the Potential OpenSourciness of Engineering...

in #blog6 years ago

I'm starting to fall in love with open-source software, and decentralization...

Working as a civil engineer, I've been thinking recently about if it would be possible, and what form it may look like, if one wanted to "open up" or otherwise "decentralize" the profession of an engineer -- perhaps at least in terms of public infrastructure. Certainly the act of designing and quantifying a safe, functional, and serviceable piece of infrastructure could be automated.

Perhaps there could be a system not dissimilar to #Utopian-io where people can get rewarded for doing a "bug" or "error" check (QA/QC checks) as is currently the status-quo within an organization.

Maybe municipal engineering departments could be more managers / approved moderators that verify valid pull requests and open up the design of infrastructure to their own communities, as well as able contributors from around the world.

Or maybe none of it makes any sense?

Does anyone think something like this might be achievable? Let me know what you think!
