Aubergines need plenty of bright sunshine to do well, far more than crops such as tomatoes and sweet peppers, so you need to plant them where they can bask in maximum sunlight.

Time to plant: early summer

Aubergines enjoying growing in a greenhouse, but don’t despair if you don’t have one as they are happy outside too, as long as they're given a bit of extra protection, such as polythene covers.

A great advantage with plants that are grown outside is that they don't tend to suffer from whitefly, a pest that can get to plague-Iike proportions in a greenhouse. You’ll fund plenty of young aubergine plants at

garden centres in late sprung, ready to plant outside after last frosts. Put them into large pots or grow bags for harvesting from late summer onwards. Towards late autumn the plants do need extra protection, but you can still collect fruits from plants grown under polythene covers after the first frosts. Feed aubergine plants in the same way that you

would tomatoes, using a high-potash liquid tomato fertiliser at half strength to encourage good howers and fruit.

TIP Aubergines hate having their feet too wet. so keep their soil or compost just moist at all times.
