American Discovery Trail Entry - Day 2

The day started with a warm ride back to the place where I finished the day before. It was a long hot walk into Milton, Delaware. I walked from Rehobeth Beach the day before, then spent the night with the state coordinator of the American Discovery Trail. I had given myself a shakedown the night before and was able to cruise along and enjoy my iPod without too much effort. A shake-down is where you empty your pack and get rid of anything but the essentials.

When I arrived into Milton, I took some photos, then found myself sitting in front of a bicycle shop. The owner exited his shop and darted around the corner where the building kept a few more shops facing the street, yet sitting back allowing for a courtyard that a deli that took advantage of for outdoor seating.

It wasn't long before his hunger took over and he made his apologies for wanting to go consume his "Jersey style" sandwich. Before he did, he recommended that I stop and have a roast beef sandwich with horseradish cheddar. I pondered whether or not I should for all of about 6 seconds. Then I made haste for the Happy Cow Deli.

As I was leaving town, I heard someone shout, "get out of the road mister!", I turned and found that it was Serinda yelling at me from her truck window. She circled around and we talked sitting on a bench overlooking the river. I needed to digest my meal anyway, so sitting with company made it all the better. Turns out she had just mailed my shake down gear back to Minnesota.

The mercury was steadily rising throughout the afternoon and the long walk on narrow roads with little to no shade was starting to take its toll. Serinda showed up once again with a cold Coke and a final goodbye. It couldn't have happened at a better time.

Just down the road a dog from one of the farm homes broke free from its yard and darted toward me as my heart slid up my throat. Within seconds I found myself laughing because the windy bag of teeth was no more than eleven inches off the ground. A small wind would send it up the street far enough to warrant reward posters. It was aggressive and frantically tried it's best to fit one of my ankles in its mouth. For aggression and effort I gave it an A, but for intimidation he will have to live with an F. A small gesture with the coke bottle kept him in his tracks and he disappointingly let me on my way.

A few hundred yards more and I would find two pint sized goats and a hog. One of the goats was clearly pregnant and looked as though she would give birth any moment, while the hog looked like it should be a member of the family rather than a future meal.

I wound up running out of water later in the day. As I walked and pondered where I should replenish it, I ran into a state forest ranger station. I found the office closed, but a spigot was out front. As I filled my bottles a ranger pulled up and asked me if I needed a campsite. I told him That I would try to find a home that would allow me to camp in their yard to save money. He gave me a free site, cold spring water, free firewood, and access to a power outlet to charge my electronics to boot.

Life is good!
