Blockchain Democracy

in #blockchain7 years ago (edited)

We received the greatest gift in self-governance from the Ancient Greeks. Washed in the blood of the heroic Spartans, polished by the wisdom of the great philosophers of Athens and Thebes, Democracy emerged as a proven form of governance, where the government for the people and by the people was possible.
Unfortunately, over the years, we have diluted the meaning of Democracy. The best we can do today can be seen as the “rule by compromise” Democracy, far from what the Ancient Greeks had in mind. The Greeks were able to grow Democracy into its final and true form – “rule by consensus”. Their voting system achieved consensus by asking every citizen to cast a vote. Today, consensus is achieved only after the two leading parties negotiate a deal. A deal is a compromise. The more ability to compromise we deligate to our government, the more inefficient and corrupt it becomes. Right? So, is the true Democracy dead forever?
Maybe not. Blockchain technologies seem to hold the keys to the revival of the True Democracy. By solving the problems of trusted contract, distributed consensus, and POW/POS verification, they created an environment where value can be almost immediately transferred between two parties in a secure, transparent, and economical way. If money can travel through blockchain, so could a citizen’s vote…
Ethereum token may be one of the solutions for the vote carrying network. Attaching a crypto wallet to a Social Security Number allows for voting token transfer to, and from, every citizen. Problem solved.
Theoretically, if we asked, our government could implement such vote carrying network for the purpose of achieving consensus through popular vote. If implemented, it would come in handy in the upcoming Gun Control battle, for example. It would also come in handy if the Russians, or anyone else, wanted to meddle with our political decisions. With blockchain vote implemented, they would find it easier to go to the open market and buy US votes at the spot price. Then, I guess, each of us, at some point, will have to decide whether to cast our vote or to sell it… Perhaps, some citizens would welcome a way to monetize the value of being an American…
But the greatest promise blockchain tech holds is the promise to make the “rule by consensus” possible again. Democracy can be restored to its former glory! If this promise holds, the public stands to benefit greatly from a truly-Democratic process and a more efficient government. In general, it is easier to govern with public support. Agree?
So, will we see the revival of the “rule by consensus”? Will we see a crypto wallet attached to a Social Security Number? That is up to us. Time will tell if we were able to step up to the plate…
